Location for Oil Temp-sender on small block?
Maybe this is a dumb question, but what is the best location for the Oil Temp-sender on a Chevy small block?
In the oil pan, where the drain plug is? Thanks for any advice. Cya, Edmond

I think there is a tap where the oil filter screws in.
You could adapt a "T" fitting to where the factory oil pressure line is on the top, rear of the block. I personnaly wouldn't put it where the oil pan drain plug is.

There's a spot at the rear of the intake manifold next to the distributor. That's what the factory used.

The spot near the oil filter, is that on the side of the block? I can see a plug, or a bolt to be more precise. Is that what you mean? Thanks. Cya, Edmond

The T in the oil pressure line will not work you have to have oil running over the sensor to get a reading. In my 81 I put the sensor in a T of the return line from the oil cooler.
I doubt the threads will be the same on the oil drain plug and the sensor, I drilled and welded in a bung on the pulling tractor oil pan and that worked fairly well.

I believe that plug near the oil filter is the same threads as the drain plug. Last time I had a block done, it came back from the shop without that plug, and no one noticed until it fired up. Then we noticed! We had a heck of a time finding a plug, tried every thing with threads on it we had and the only thing that would fit was drain plug, but that didn't stop the leak, it's got to be an allen head or pipe plug. I think if you had a skinny enough sensor, it would work there.

Hello Edmond,
I donīt know if there is any different places to put the sender unit. What I know about this thing is that there was an aftermarket oil temperature gauge mounted in the Camaro I bought in Germany and the sender unit was built in to the drain plug. I did replace the instrument panel to an unmolested original as well as the the drain plug. I think I have the sender/drainplug somewere, you can have the sender for free if you want to go with that solution, just let me know. I send it to you in an envelope, if I can find it of course.
