ignorant 12 bolt question
While adjusting rear drums, one wheel in the air, tranny in neutral...
Rotating the rear hub by hand ~1/2 turn each way, I noticed different resistance going forward vs backward. Same with the drum off, so brakes not involved Is that unusual?

I would run it. But if you are worried about the axle maybe disconnect the driveshaft and try the test again with the drums off. Would bet what you are thinking is a problem goes away.

Recently I noticed the same thing on my 12 bolt posi equipped '67 while adjusting the rear drums. In neutral, it was way easier to turn the wheels one way vs the other way...don't remember which was which though. I used the easy turn to finish what I was doing and didn't think about it again until reading this post! -Kevin

It felt the same without the drums. It wasn't alarming, but I couldn't think of a reason it'd be different.
I need to swap the diff gasket and pinion anyway, so if there's anything wonky in there, I'll know soon enough. Thanks

The difference is the resistance caused by turning the pinon shaft. If the ring and pinion were straight cut gears the torque to turn would be the same in both directions. With hypoid cut gears there is more drag induced when turning. The amount of drag differs depending on the direction turned. The amount of torque to turn is magnified by using the axle to turn the pinion or in other words driving the gears backwards.
