generator alternator upgrade
I am upgrading my 61 235 to power steering and alternator with a bracket kit from Davis speed equipment and I'm trying to figure out what Alternator to use. I would like to use a make it easy and use a single wire alternator. What one would work best for me?

Re: generator alternator upgrade
Take a look at MadElectrical.com - lots of good information there on wiring requirements, alternators and suggestions on how to setup. I went with a CS130 and used the "sense" wire to a terminal between the battery, the alternator and the 12v wire to the cab. Which alternator depends on what your loads are going to be. Have fun!

Re: generator alternator upgrade
Thanks bhap, I do not have much of a load on the system. The rest of the truck is stock.

Re: generator alternator upgrade
I have been really happy with Powermaster. They good because they actually charge at low RPM. I have heard other one wire alternators don't. You will need to bypass the voltage regulator.

Re: generator alternator upgrade
Thank for the info. I knew I had to bypass the regulator.
bhap, did you order anything from the Mad electrical? I want to order the wiring harness they sell to convert to a three wire alternator. I have not had a chance to call, just wondering if they still open. |

Re: generator alternator upgrade
I did not buy from them. I ended up buying some Packard 56 terminals and modifying my existing harness. I added a fused buss bar where the regulator was and increased wire size to the battery and the cab.

Re: generator alternator upgrade
Has anyone wired up a three wire alternator with original wiring harness?
I was told the three wire is to much for the wiring to handle and may cause issues |

Re: generator alternator upgrade
I did a 3 wire 10SI and haven't had any issues since I did the swap last year. I did run a second power wire from the horn bus relay to the battery since I didn't remove the original one just in case the original was too small
