Re: Murray thermostats
Stant was bought by Motorad. My personal recommendation would be the Mr. Gasket "deep dish" aka hi-flow units. (they are actually Robert Shaw)

Re: Murray thermostats
I have and am using the murray without any issues. Today, I mainly make sure I get one that fails in the open position,

I second the Robert Shaw style thermostats.

Re: Murray thermostats
for what its worth "fails in the open position" isn't what you think...if the engine overheats, and the thermostat opens further than it normally would, there is a notch on the shaft that hangs up ...so when the engine cools down the thermostat remains in the open position...maybe so you can drive it further before it overheats the next time?....but they are still fully capable of failing to open in the first place...i second the Robert Shaw style...and take a good look at the Murray, it probably has Motorad printed on it...the 454 in my camper uses the smaller size (no RobertShaw available)...i bought 4 different thermostats with different descriptions from all 4 chain stores and they were all Motorads in different boxes...and 2 were defective

Re: Murray thermostats
Most automotive chain stores only carry parts that make them the most profit. That means cheaper with an unknown brand name. It may be manufactured by a known company but to a lower standard than their name brand. Usually that standard is spec'ed out by corporate goons at the parts store for their house brand. Making a more profitable part that will fail sooner, a win, win in the eyes of the boardroom.

Re: Murray thermostats
330-160 and 330-180....watch for chinese counterfeit garbage.
Mr. Gasket sells them also, pn 4363 for the 160, 4364 for the 180. Napa also has the Mr. Gasket product, their pn's are 825-1006 and 7 respectively.
