Two Bad Fenders to Make One Good One?
The original driver's side fender on my '68 fits like a glove! The problem is that the front is bashed in badly and the attempted repair looks like garbage. I attempted to use a heavy amount of fiberglass filler and I just cannot get the profile right on the front.
I have a repop fender and it fits like crap! I took some measurements and the welds to the inside frame are way off. The skin on the outside seems fine though. I am tempted to try cutting the front outer portion of the repop fender off and welding it on to the old one to make one perfect fender. Should I try it? |

All depends on how comfortable you are with cutting and welding I did a similar repair on a passenger fender . The OEM was really banged up so I cut the cup portion and the wheel well lip about half way . Took a lot of measuring and cutting and fitting but it tuned out well . What do you have to lose you don’t have a workable fender anyways so even if you don’t like the end result you not out anything . Last picture is letting it bake in the sun after I took it out of my spray booth

Re: Two Bad Fenders to Make One Good One?
OEM drivers side is easier to find than passenger side fenders that’s why I ended up cutting the passenger side up .

Sorry, it's been a few months...but I did it, and it worked like a dream. Used a combination of flange and butt welds and a little bit of body filler. Sealed the back of the welds with 3M panel bond epoxy. upload images upload images upload images upload images |

Post more pics when you get a chance. I'm using the same paint on my step side. Is it acrylic urethane? Single stage?

I repaired the fenders on my 1970 Blazer using sections from severely dented but rust free 1972 fenders from my donor Blazer.

image hosting Before: image hosting I'm doing single stage enamel in my shop, a panel or two at a time...Fan in the window... No booth. I saw an old black and white photo of a guy in a service station garage with a cigar in his mouth painting a car. I figured if he could do it, I can do it (with a respirator instead of the cigar). It's a slow process but it works and produces decent results... Honestly, I like the look of it over base/clear. Using PPG Omni MAE acrylic enamel with hardener in 503 Light Green and 526 White Ivory (PPG 8290) for color. PPG Omni MP170 epoxy primer on bare metal, followed by Sherwin Williams Finish 1, 2K high build primer. I'm going with 4 coats of the color, wet sanding to 3K grit, and buffing with Maguires 110 heavy cut compound. I'll Turtle Wax it once a year. Last edited by IDC10; Yesterday at 01:33 AM. |

[QUOTE=1970cstblazer;9360857]I repaired the fenders on my 1970 Blazer using sections from severely dented but rust free 1972 fenders from my donor Blazer.
Both of my fenders were rotted in that area. Had to do the passenger side front scoop as well. Once I did the rocker panels and cab corners, I slowly gained the confidence to the other panels on the truck. Even bought some scrap 16 gauge from a local fabrication shop, bought a simple sheet metal brake and made some of my own repair panels for some floor sections. I've been looking at the Lakeside Autobody Youtube Channel out of Michigan... and using some of his techniques. He's short and to the point and shows the basic techniques of rust repair. |

Re: Two Bad Fenders to Make One Good One?
I'm a fan of acrylic enamel. I'm with you on base coat/clear, it's nice but has a plasticky look I don't care for.
Thanks for the info! It gives me hope I can get mine painted! Inside of cab looks great!
