Which White Color
Hello all,
Opinions needed. I shot one side of my suburban,, I bought the white color that is on my wife's 2002 2500 burb. It feels very yellow. Below is not a great pick but would you go bright white like before of the newer GM off white 2002? |

Re: Which White Color
Don't trust those inside lights to provide a proper spectrum to compare whites. Even modern LEDs are often color shifted. A high K number is blue shifted. A low K is red shifted. Even worse are fluorescents. If possible, put wife's burb next to yours in the same light, then compare.
Off white often works well in house paint. But not so much for cars. |

Re: Which White Color
I got the biggest BS excuse i have ever heard this morning..
My paint store says it is common for the "paint code" not to be close to the OE color on the 2002 suburban. I think this is BS.. When I painted my CJ7,, I requested 1978 ford Medium Copper. Matched exactly. Requested paint for a 2002 suburban white. Got some cream color. The 2002 suburban is more white than my 89. Look at the 89 cowl against the 02 burb and then look at the VSB paint on my 89 compared to the hood. No where close. |

Re: Which White Color
The "Paint Code often doesn't match" is probably required by the firm's lawyers to cover cases where fading or other things have happened to the original paint. A smart shop will ask for a sample to match, scan that with a magic wand and generate a paint mix to match. I did that with some house paint and it was so close I had trouble telling where the new top coat paint was vs the under coat paint used for the match.
Is that cowl the same that is pictured on the 89? It seems to match the hood while the fender is 'off white' by comparison. |

I get the exact match on faded paint etc.. But think how how many colors are selected simple with a paint chip/swatch from a book. How many hotrods pic a color from a book with nothing to match from. |

Re: Which White Color
I would take the pics of the cowl vs 2002 and the pics of the cowl vs "their fender paint" and ask them to explain why theirs is so off white compared to yours.
Just to ask because they should, Same primer on both cowl, hood and fender? If you have a piece painted with your white, take it with so the paint place can compare and use a magic wand if they have one. Then see how the new paint code compares to the cream code. |

Re: Which White Color
I sent them an email asking for the paint refund..
I already order pure white from summit racing,,, I will shoot it this weekend.. I need the truck out of the shop.. I think their excuse sucks... What if I wanted some 70s mopar color. would i need to find a classic and take the fender to the paint store? Thankfully it is only 400$ and one side of the truck |

Re: Which White Color
I tired to match white years ago and I was amazed how hard it is. Do you know what color primer is used under each vehicle? Different shades of primer will give you different shades of white. You may want to try some different primers on some paint cards and see if you can get a closer match.

If i was spraying over red or yellow primer i could see the possibility.. It is an error at the store i think. It is off more than the shade or tone... very creamy white and the 2002 burb is a bright white. I might mix some and spray a sample and lay it on the 2002 |

Re: Which White Color
On some cars we needed to supply the vin # along with the paint code as there were variations of the exact same color depending on the date of production . Some had three or four variations in a model year and also where the truck or car was manufactured. Some plants used waterborne and some used traditional paints . In my opinion you would be better off having them gun the paint with a spectrophotometer. As said primer will greatly effect the finish color also

Re: Which White Color
Well I finished the paint, went with the off white for now,,, half was done and my daughter liked it..
Anyway,,, If anyone ever comes across Franchi and Kim paint i would pass. Full disclosure I have only painted a dozen cars and all were base/clear, Not single stage. Anyway,, this SS paint refuses to lay. No matter the PSI, fan, paint amount and reducer it wants looks more like Rhino liner. Data sheet says max 10% reducer and at that it will not draw from the cup. At 20% i could get it to smooth out some. I have never painted so slow with such a narrow pattern in an attempt to look nice.. Anyway,,, going to be a decent amount of cut and buff to save. I hope i saved someone some headaches in the future.. Chris |
