New oil pump while the pan is off?
I eventually plant to put a new gasket on the oil pad. Would it be a good idea to change the oil pump while I am in there? Would a higher flow one help the stock 402 any or is it better to no disturb it if it is working.
Is there a better, bigger, pan to put on, a new one would be lighter I am sure. Edit: I guess I would need to take the oil pump off anyways if I were to re-do the rear main while in there

What is your current oil pressure at idle and driving? |

If it's not broke don't fix it
 If it were me I would pull the pump cover and inspect for any scoring on the pump body and gears. If it looks good then clean and reinstall the pump cover using red loctite on the bolts. When you pull the rear main cap check the bearing for any wear. Post some pics as we all like those! I would keep the stock pan. |

Pumps very rarely fail, although pressed-in pickups can and do.
High-volume pumps are a crutch for worn bearings, or in cases like racing engines where some builders use wider-than-standard bearing clearances. I’d leave it alone. |

The extra volume puts a lot of oil up on top (too much) and it adds to the leaky valve cover gaskets. Also the high volume can be a good thing if you have an oil cooler for towing but for normal around town stuff it's not necessary. If you see some scoring on the top cover you can lap that on a sheet of glass with wet/dry paper.

Just refreshed my 200k mile 350 in my 98. New oil pan, but kept the old oil pump. Still puts out way more pressure then minimum.

If you'll pardon the obvious, the oil pump is the most lubricated part of the motor. They almost never go bad unless they have picked up some grit.
I hear you though. I'd be tempted to change it just because, but there isn't much logic in replacing a good pump with an unknown even it it's new. I'd leave it if the motor is clean.
