Battery plug?

Got a new battery and this plug thing was carefully placed under the negative post protector.
Already tossed it in the trash but I can dig it back out if need be.
Anybody know what it's for?

Re: Battery plug?

Maybe a thread protector for side post battery terminals?

Wink Re: Battery plug?

I considered that possibility but this battery doesn't come with side posts.
Maybe somebody mistakenly added it because one would think that the positive post would be the one to be protected with a red plug but none was included.
I just tossed it and was having second thoughts about that idea.
Haven't even used the battery while driving yet so now would be the time to find out if I needed it.

Re: Battery plug?

.

No scale in the image of the "plug" so don't know how big it is. But if it was under the post protector, it must be small. Check around the edges of the battery case for some place to plug that thing in. I think your battery has a vent and this is a nipple for vent hose.

Total wild guess though.

Re: Battery plug?

Not sure about that plug thing but that style positive cable clamp is questionable.

Re: Battery plug?

group 24F is a common Japanese car battery, same battery in Mrs. Bee's lexus wagon

batteries installed inside the passenger compartment have to be vented outside

the plug is to cover the vent hole opposite the side the vent tube is installed

for your installation in the engine compartment you can disregard the plug

What's wrong with the clamp, been working great forever.

That's great news, you're my new best friend!

I was headed to town and noticed my volt meter wasn't up to where it should be.
I suspected a bad alternator so I headed to NAPA because it had a lifetime warranty.
Guy tested it and said the battery was good but maybe the regulator went bad so I replaced the alternator in the parking lot.
No change on the volt meter so I had them retest the system.
This time they said the battery was bad but didn't make me return the alternator so I was happy about that.
When swapping alternators I noticed my junkyard plug was a total disaster so I'm swapping that out.

Between the new battery, new alternator, (rebuilt) and my new alternator plug this truck is charging wonderfully.
I do love it when things go right.

I had terrible experiences with emergency repair battery terminals like these.

I had a high resistance connection although the wire was inspected, freshly cleaned and re-inserted and tightened into that &#$?&! terminal. It's my own fault for misdiagnosing needing a starter, which led to me getting a new starter, and improper shimming of the starter led to me chewing up the flex plate, and I still had starting problems. I was fuming. Then I had a saga trying to replace the battery cable with one obtained through brick and mortar channels, eventually led to fixing the problem. And changed the flex plate. Anyway I swore off emergency repair battery terminals. I have bookmarked a discussion about Battery Cables USA, and will buy from them next time I need a battery cable. I'll have them add 12 gauge accessory wires to send voltage to my fender-mounted junction block with fusible link.

Re: Battery plug?

Wow now I understand.

Sorry to hear you went through so much trouble diagnosing the problem, I've never experienced any issues but now I'm wondering just what I might be looking for as far as a new positive and negative battery cable goes.

ETA: I read your post on the battery cables/terminals...wow!

Re: Battery plug?

Oh yea, I may as well show you all the other half of my gauge cluster since I'm awake at 4AM and I had a picture of it.
I filled in that blank spot on my cluster with a B&M transmission temperature gauge and put blue lighting behind everything to match my radio.
Getting ready to install an electric fuel pump so I mounted my inertia switch upside down in a convenient spot and have since painted the cap black to make it disappear. (works fine)
I have a subwoofer enclosure between the bucket seats so nobody will be sitting there kicking the switch and shutting off the fuel supply.
OK back to sleep. zzzzz

Re: Battery plug?

There is nothing wrong with that type of battery terminal, as long as the cable is inserted all the way and the bolts/nuts are all tight. Yes, the proper thing to do is to replace the entire battery cable, but that terminal will work just fine.
