Thanks for posting the photos and the story so far.
One can definitely see the brand engineering between the Ford and Mercury. The Mercury has the larger transmission shaft, larger clutch and the larger fuel tank. I'd bet the fuel capacity and clutch size were touted by Mercury salespeople to get folks to step up and spend that little bit more.
