Unhappy VIN , again , I know...

Hi Guys ,

something I don't get :

on my Burb , I have the plate giving the VIN , being : 1G8EC16C0GF followed by the six numbers

I did a search on Google , that VIN doesn't exist ,

while the VIN : 1G8EC16C0CF------ ( hidden ;D ) do well exist...

so , WTF ?

I want to know if my Burb is a 1982 or a 1986...

can someone help me , I think it is a 1982 , but I'm not sure , knowing that on my Burb , the light & the wiper's switches are on the same place ( dash ) than on my 1979 C-10 , while , I think , the wiper's switch on a 1986 should be on the left stick , right ?

I can't rely on the title , as it mentions 1967

this all because I need an other Tilt steering column , but I need to know the year before I order one ( wiring... )

thanks for your replies

the Baron

Not sure what year the burb is but the VIN is definitely an '86. The 10th character is a G, which denotes 1986. They began with the letter A in 1980 and have skipped a few along the way (I&O for obvious reasons and maybe some others). I'm not sure how they do it now. . .

Lights and wipers on the dash would say it is 83 or older if it has not been changed. An 86 should have the column mounted controls, windhshield washers on the wipers, and the washer pump in the washer fluid reservoir.,

79Silv, starting from MY 2001 numbers are used instead of letters. And yes, 1 designates 2001, 2 2002 etc. What GM will do after 2009 i don't know

Hi Beater ,

the washer pump is on the wipers motor , like on the 1979 C-10

all the instruments and buttons I have on the Burb are the same than on my C-10 , so I presume it is indeed a 1982...

I'll take a look this evening on the frame , where the VIN is engraved to see if I read a C or a G as 10th digit

hereby a pic of the dash , you may clearly see that the only control I have on that left command stick is the C.C. knob , and that the wipers & lights switches are where they should be on a 1982 truck :

here...

According to that, it makes it an 1986 model...if it in fact is a "G" and not a "C". By looking at the dash, it appears to be a early 80's model...so maybe the "G" is really a "C" and it is a 1982 model.

That's my guess... Sometimes they are a bit hard to decipher because of rust or scale build up...

OK Guys ,

I got it...

I took a look at the plate on the driver's side dash , it is rusted and scaled indeed , but I could read a C , so my Burb is a 1982 one...

But on the left side of the frame , just were the tranny crossmember is bolted , there is a number that doesn't match with the VIN : strange , if you'd ask me ...

I know there is another number on the passenger side , but I'll have to crawl under the car to see it ( it sit in a garage box ) , next time maybe

Kewl !

the plate glued by the Belgian road security agency under the hood was wrong ( morons ! )

thanks for all your replies

I know now what I need to order when it will break down ( it sure will , I know... )

Baron,

I'm curious about your 'burb. I see from the dash that it was originally a diesel. 1982 would have had the 6.2L diesel. It's not uncommon to replace a bad diesel with a gasser, but I see that yours now has a 350 Olds engine. I'm curious to why an Olds engine? Did you do the swap, or was it like that when you got it?

The 6.2L diesel shares Chevy bellhousing and motor mounts. The older 5.7L diesel shared the Oldsmobile bellhousing and motor mounts.

Casey ,

the 6.2 was toast when I bought this burb , the TH700R4 being one of the first generation.

I had at that moment two trucks : a 1979 C-10 and that 1982 Burb

I've seen on this forum the kind of problems you can get with a bad adjusted TH700 , I don't want it on my Burb , plus the fact that I also didn't have the cash to buy a Chevy engine to put on the TH700 , while I was parting out my 1979 C-10 ( it was beyond any economical repair) , wich was equiped with a good 350 Olds engine ( gasser )/ TH400 ( that C-10 was originally equipped from the factory with the "infamous" 350 Diesel )

do you follow ?

so , I've thrown the 6.2 away , as I did with the TH700R4 , and I've put in there the engine/tranny combo I had in my C-10 , much better in my opinion...

and as I love that 73-80 front clip , I will put the front clip of my 1979 C-10 on the 1982 Burb...

By the way , for our europeans friends , I still have the TH 700 ( in good shape ) & the 6.2 ( complete , with starter , for parts only ) for sale , 400 € for each...

Ah, yes! I follow!

I've done the very same sort of thing before. I had a '77 Blazer that had a bad 305 when I bought it, so I replaced it with another 305, then swapped in a 5.7L diesel, then swapped that for a 6.2L diesel, then put another 305 back in and sold it!
