Rear Axle interchange

I noticed a posting about going to five bolt on the rear. Let's not get into 6 bolt selection cause I've yet to see a Torque-Thrust with a 6 bolt pattern.

My question is, what axles are interchangable on our trucks? Can you go with newer like the mid 70's? Or is it just 71-72 12 bolts?

I've heard of guys doing something with a mid 60's truck by swapping the axles.

I like the 5 spoke wheels and already run 5 bolt on the front. Just trying to do a poor mans swap (eventually).

And I'm talking just the axles, not the entire rearend and housing.

A few people on the board have a whole list of different parts. Using certain year axles, different year brake drum, another year brake shoes to make it all fit, I personally think it is more covenient and safer to change the entire housing, Most all rear ends in these trucks have 3.73's in them anyway.

I got a housing, pair of axles, set of 3.73's, 50 bucks if you come pick it up. Your old 6 lug carrier and gears should work if you want to transfer them.

Its also got the brake drums i'm pretty sure, has to be built though

You could also check into getting axles made for your truck. Or having your axles welded and redrilled for a 5 on 5. You could summit and ask them about axles. I know "race" axles are about 250 a pair, they may have a cheaper "street" quality that would work just as well.

They do make a Torq-Thrust in a 6-lug. I had my original axles re-drilled on my 67 initially & just bought some replacement(better quality)Moser axles for my beater 68. TIP: if you do decide to go w/Mosers, send them an original axle & spider gear so they can machine the splines correctly the first time & duck tape the spider gear to the axle(use an entire role if needed to keep the two from coming apart!!)so they don't lose the gear. . . oh no wait . . . thats right . . . I just remembered, I must have forgotten to put the gear on the axle . . . I just put the tape on the axle for the hell of it. Hmmmm, do I sound bitter?
