Std. or HD coil springs.?
Finishing the C10 front end next week. I wonder about the new springs. I'm planning on the std. coils because I think they'll give a smoother ride. Will they? I don't do much heavy hauling now. HD will raise the height how much more?

I just recently replaced the front spnigs on my truck and it does make the ride a lot smoother. More so then when I replaced the shocks.

I haven't done the fronts on my 72 yet but i did do the rear. I used standard ride coils and achevied 2 1/4" of ride height with no box on it. It seems very stiff, kinda like a lumber wagon. I sure hope when I get the box on it, it softens up a bit. Front coils will be next years project.

Where are you guys getting your coils from? I've been thinking about replacing mine.

I ordered my springs from American Classic parts. (There's a link on the main page for this site.) They're HD on front and regular duty on the back. I call it a firm, smooth ride. The bouncy-bouncy is gone.

When you look a springs they usually list normal and variable rate springs. I think you would want to go with the variable rate. They should give you a softer ride until you toss a load in the back and then the heavy hauling part of the spring takes over.

For springs, check the prices at your local parts stores before you do the mail-order thing (unless your wanting drop springs). There prices may be about the same as having some shipped to you. The front springs on our trucks are the same ones used on certain Chevy's all the way thru the mid 90's so your local store will have them. Most places will have TRW or MOOG springs in standard or HD for front and standard, variable rate, or HD for rear.

I recently purchased new front springs for my truck...I checked a few online places, and ended up getting MOOG standard duty front springs ( I dont want to even think of re-doing the front end just for springs, its a lot of work) The local parts store could get the springs cheaper than summitracing. I think I paid 76bucks for the pair. WELL worth the cost of just replacing them. But I did take them in to be powdercoated, they were just painted. I looked at
TRW springs as well, but since the entire front end balljoints etc I purchase were MOOG, I decided to just stick with the MOOG line. Also, for rear springs, MOOG only sells a Heavyduty ones, TRW has a vari-able rate spring, but because the rear springs are so easy to change, I going to put the originals back in and see how it performs before I replace them.

I don't know if I'll ever get to the back ones. The control arm nuts will have to be cut off I think. I ve had new poly bushings for the rear for years now if I ever do. My reason of thinking is you don't carry a load up front so why use HD's up there. In the back I use air shocks so I can level it out to custom fit a load. I use coil over shocks up front now but may not need them when new coils are in. I wish I could afford the new Edelbrock shocks. Sounds like they might work good.

I went through the spring thing and here is what I found. In the rear 3/4 ton worked the best. HD 3/4 ton were way to firm and the truck sat about 3/4 of an inch lower than the standerd 3/4 ton springs. The variable rat springs sat the lowest. Thank God they took back all the springs I didnt want. For the front I used BB springs which is the same as HD springs. At the time I had a 307 and the truck was almost level. It road good but seemed like it could use some weight up front. When I put the 402 in it didnt change the ride hight in the front. still sat almost level. I just made 1/2 inch spacers for the rear springs. Gave the truck a little more rake. I might add another 1/2 inch.
