Goes better, won't stop for crap!
Finally broke down and bought a timing light yesterday, because ever since I swapped to HEI my gas mileage has sucked. I found my timing was way advanced (mark was at 12 o'clock position on balancer ). Dialed it back to 16 degrees (as far as I could go without pulling the dizzy and backing off a tooth) and now my brakes act like there isn't enough vacuum to work properly. How do I get my timing right and have brakes that work properly?

man your still waiting.....
no body want's to be first...but always willing to add there comments get someone to click over the engine for you..... pull #1 plug....first on drivers side front click over till compression blows your finger out of the hole...... line up the marks on the timing tab....with the mark on the balancer... this is TDC on the compression storke....where you want to be.... pull dizzy and point the rotor toward's # 1 plug on driver's side.... reinstall....... make sure that # plug wire in the hole on the cap ...that lines up to the rotor... make sure you changed the resistor wire form your old points dizzy to a reg. wire from a switched 12 volt terminal on the fuse block.... adjust timing to 8 deg. No problem with how to time it, I am wondering why my brakes are acting up. Would my vacuum drop with retarding the timing?

Yep, but I would not think it would be enough to mess with your brakes. Did you reconect the vacume line to the vacume advance? check all the other lines as well. Expecialy if you are still running a stock cam of miled cam. Modified cams tend to run low vacume to begin with so timeing might get you close to that point to where the brakes are starving for vacume. IMO.

Figured out the problem with the brakes, the gasket that goes between the booster and m/c was installed backwards. I'm my own worst enemy! After I took a good hard look at it I realized there was only one way to go with it! Of course I got it wrong the first time.
I am proud of the fact that I pulled the distributor, pulled all the wires off of the cap to replace them (75 'vette wires are great BTW! ) and managed to get it all back together and fire off on the first try!
