Gasket ?
Anybody got any input on Exhaust Manifold Gaskets? Do you use or not use? I've been told (by one guy) that the manifolds change shape so much if you have gaskets in there, that they actually leak more easily that way than if you mate Metal to Metal and let the carbon fill the holes. Any input?

I run gaskets with all my Manifolds never no leaking problems now headers are a diffrent ballgame.

The manifolds do chainge shape, there is actually a tool for streaching them. I had to use one on one of the manifolds on the caddy engine.
IMO, if they can chainge shape enough for that drastic of measures, then there is no way it'll stay perfectly flat...which means you'll need a gasket. Last edited by Longhorn Man; 10-06-2004 at 05:42 AM. |

I have taken manifolds off,and then have to use a prybar to stretch them to get the things back on,but I have never had a leak because of using gaskets.

GM sells a multiple layer stainless steel exh. gasket that will fit all 6 bolt manifolds. THEY DO NOT LEAK. the part # slips me right now but I believe they are for mid to late 90's trucks. I will have to get to work & get the # for you. we use them religiously with absolutely no problems at all. I even put them on my '68 when I had manifolds.

I have always used gaskets, without any problems.....however, i have been told that the sb Chev does not need them(assuming the surfaces are clean, & relatively flat). i got this info from an old man with 40 + yrs in ex work.....so my bet is he is right on that!

When I took my ramhorns off my truck to put on headers, there where no gaskets on them, and was no leaks.

On sb chevys, I never use gaskets with manifolds. You may get a slight leak, only noticable by carbon stain. With gaskets, they tend to blow out in one spot and leak badly from that spot.

Same here. I've had more leaks with gaskets on exhaust manifolds than without.
The thing to watch is swapping heads or manifolds that have not been mated before. My machinist told me once that over time, they achieve a "set" level of alignment, and if you replace either head or manifold, they should be resurfaced to ensure they are flat. You can check it with a piece of 1/4" or thicker glass, but to be safe, go with a quick resurface and it should work fine. SSOW

Thanks for the input, guys. Sounds like there has been an equal amount of success either way. I guess I'll have to go with my gut on this one.
