Plastic or wood would be the best, but alluminum works too. I use a 2 inch open hole spacer.

Spacer Wouldn't cause any clearance issue on stock engins and hood?

on a small block, with a normal sized air filter, there are no hood clearance problems at all.
I have a 2 inch on top of an edelbrock performer RPM intake, all capped off with a 4 inch tall air filter. Still have plenty of room. Actually, i should say I HAD that set up. |

I'm running the 2" with a stock intake, Ed. 1406, and 4" filter. No clearance problems, but can't speak to performance since I never tried without the spacer.

I have a Carter AFB 600CFM 9605 [=Edbk 1405] on a 350 in a '71 Jimmy. Last week the carb started running rough. I R&R'd the accelerator pump plunger, but had problems when I tried to put it back together -- the needle valve caught on the driverside float and the float level got bent in reassembly. So I had to haul it off the block and re-carb. Once I pulled the AFB, I saw I had a velocity stack of some paper gaskets and aluminum templates that I had forgotten about. Maybe one of my buddy's ideas. (I wondered where that vacuum leak/high-pitched whistle was coming from.) Anyway once I rebuilt the carb I started looking around the shop for some Carter/Edelbrock gaskets and found -- a 1/2" phenolic squarebore spacer. Since I had been following this thread, I knew what it was good for!
After a good cleaning the carb went together ok. The engine never ran smoother. Good call guys.

FYI- I called Schucks auto supply here local. They quoted me $29.99 for the edelbrock-8713 carb spacer. Summit is asking $33.95. It pays to check around.

Has anyone had problems with the throttle rod when running a spacer?? I have a rod, not a throttle cable, and when i went to go put on a spacer the linkage would bind up....... never had time to fix it, so the spacer is just sitting on the shelf collecting dust. What has everyone done?

Mike, i have a spare I'll try to remember to bring it to you. It'll fit under a quadra jet.
I have a throttle rod on mine, and never had a binding problem, and that is on top of a sorta-high rise intake. |
