not sure if this helps but i had a valve that 1/4 of it was broken off so the cylinder was dead. and another cylinder was dead for i am not sure what reason, it was a 250L6 and it ran fine with the timing set at 25 degrees advanced. i could have it run and pull off the plug wires to see how the motor responded and it would still run on 3 cylinders but $h!+y, but when i pulled off the wires to the dead cylinders it made no difference.

Hmm, just checked and it ends up that the truck I just bought has points as well. The HEI was an option back then, but the guy who bought my 74 from the dealership opted out of getting it. Offer is still open on the more expensive HEI after I get my TPI HEI installed...

The port on the choke pull off valve should not be sucking air I would guess the diaphragm is busted. Double check your plug wires, make sure they are going to the right plug, I bought a Nova for 100 bucks after a guy did a tune up and couldn't get it running right idled good but sputtered and backfired during accel, he had two wires crossed. The dwell should not change after it is set. Disconnect the vacuum advance and plug the port on the carb when you set timing. Also check the vacuum advance diaphragm suck on the hose should not leak any air.

Did it run right before?

It starter a few days ago while going down the highway. A slight miss once in awhile. I have a rear plug that fouls every once in a while. I put new plugs in and it ran worse. I did not reverse any wires. I know this becuase I remove 1 plug at a time and replace the wire to the plug at the same time. That way I do not have to worry about crossing wires. I had to order the choke pull off valve so for now both the ports are plugged.
