What size valves on 882 heads? 1.75/1.50?

Hey guys,

I just pulled the 882 heads off of my '77 350 (going into my 70 C-10) & put a tape measure to the valves. I my be smoking crack again, but I swear the intake valves measured 1.75" & exhaust 1.50". I thought that all 882 heads had 1.94/1.50 valve sizes!?. Did I measure horribly incorrectly, or am I on crack again?

your not on crack...

you are measuring correctly. I also had a set of 882 heads with same valves. do not put a dime into 882's. if they are good UNCRACKED heads run them, if anything at all is wrong or in need of attention. Purchase a different set of heads. 882's are a lt. duty casting, large combustion chamber (76cc), terrible runner flow, and very prone to cracking. it would be worth your time and money to invest in a better pair of heads than to spend any money on 882's... other than a spray-off at the car wash...or a look-at from a machine shop... just my 2cents...

Thanks for the info. Now I REALLY wish I had jumped on that $250 set of Vortec a few months ago.

Motor only:
6.44 1/8 @ 104.13
10.39 1/4 @ 125.83

Nitrous Times:
5.785 1/8 @ 118.65 with a 1.336 60ft
9.168 1/4 @ 142.58 with a 250 shot dead out of the hole!

I have a book titled "How to Rebuild your Small Block Chevy", it actually says to throw those heads (882's) away.

Here ya go:
"882" – 333882. These heads were found on early-late 70's 350 and 400 engines. They had 76CC combustion chambers, 1.94/13.50" valves, DO have accessory holes, intake port volume is 160CC's, exhaust port volume is 60CC's. These heads are made of thinner castings and are prone to cracking as well. The exhaust port on these heads is rather weak in my humble opinion, and is not considered to be a good performance head. I have read some flow numbers on the internet regarding the 882's, and I have a hard time believing some of the flow numbers people are posting on these particular castings. I did extensive flow testing on several of these particular castings, and was not very impressed with their flow characteristics. The 441 or 487 are a much better large chamber head (in my humble opinion). The 882 intake port is very close to that of the 624, the exhaust side is where the 882 is weaker. 882's arent as bad as everyone makes them out to be Ive seen more 906 Vortec Heads Cracked Between the Cylinders Than ive seen 882s cracked

882s are a heavy weight head . Newer heads are lightwieght IMO not as good.

882's come with either 1.94s or 1.72s Chevrolet Casting Numbers Are Worthless As Tits On a Bore Hog .. They give you a general idea but The Only way to tell is to look. Same on the engine Bolt Main Casting.

Ive had a 4 Bolt 3970014 and 2 Bolt 3970010 Both Contradicts what the books and mortec say.



Ands 624s are total garbage As far as the Crack Proned heads go

Dont get them Ungodly Hot and you Wont Have a problem.
