I started to jump in on the other thread below, but thought it best to start another since my problem is a little different. My transmissing will pull and shift fine as long as I have it in drive. When I was driving it home right after I bought it, I noticed that if I pulled in down into a lower gear, it didn't seem to make a difference. If it was shifting down, I couldn't tell it. I did notice after I got it home that it was a couple quarts low on transmissing fluid. Would that be the likely cause of my problem, or do I need to look at something else. I've since put fluid in it, but haven't taken it back out on the road because I don't have a tag for it yet. Any ideas appreciated.

Two quarts of fluid will make a big difference. I suspect that it will work right unless you have something major wronmg.

Did the linkage feel sloppy at all?
Is there a chance you were in second gear when you dropped it down?

Two big no-nos with a 400 are running low on fluid and running hot. Both can prove fatal in a hurry.

When I went to get the truck, I decided to drive it home and check out as much as I could on the road. Had my brother following me with the trailer just in case. I had to come down some pretty steep grades, and I dropped the shifter down one notch from drive to second (?) to decrease my speed a little, and just to see if it would gear down. I wasn't going very fast at all, maybe 20-25, and when I pulled it down, I couldn't tell any difference at all in engine speed. In fact, once when I stopped for gas, I got ready to leave and accidentally pulled it down into 2nd instead of drive. I was way down the road before I happened to look down and realize I wasn't in drive. Couldn't tell by the sound, engine speed, or anything. Don't know if this information tells you anything or not. I know it's almost impossible to trouble shoot something like this over the internet, but I appreciate your ideas. It gives me something to check.
