taper on pistons rings
what is the purpose of the taper on the inside of 1st and 2nd piston rings. On the inside part one corner is squared and one is angled.

It allows the combustion gasses to exert outward pressure on the rings, and therefore on the cylinder walls.

The little taper should be on top, the square side down.

Yes, both. The rings should have included a little piece of paper explaining installation.
