Need Help on New Sheet Metal
I hope someone can help with this? Here is the way i look at it.
The cost of a new fender say $175.00 The cost of cleaning it up to be like new. You have to strip it, fill it, prime it, sand it and so on. the cost ? maybe $250.00 The problem i have is that i have been told by someone who sell them, is that they don't line up. Are there any good ones out there? the cost of new fenders and inners, doors and bedsides are way cheaper them body shops and it is new..... Help |

I have no experience with new products, but I have replace some doors and even using used doors doesn't guarantee a good fit. In fact my truck is all original and it would take me a week to fix the gaps on all my panels. From what I have read on here good aftermarket sheet metal will fit with some work.

Some of the generic panels,el cheapo's,are just that, and for a haytruck they will work. But on something you're gonna have to look at and appreciate everyday, spend the money for a nice replacement panel if that's what you choose to do.I have seen cheap panels be short,or even the body line be in hte wrong place by a smidge (technical term for not much).
I prefer a nice straight rustfree used OEM GM piece myself.Just stands to reason they would make the best panels. Getting them to fit well is another thing.Like krue said It might take a week to do,depending on how you are about it fitting right.Nothing like a nice evenly spaced gap on all sides to me.

If you get repro from the board vendors they are solid straight no extra work and I believe most of the new units are galvanized. A real big plus as the OEM are not.

If you've taken one of these trucks apart, you'll notice they used shimms, right from the fatory.. if you've taken more than one apart, you'll notice that the shimms don't go in the same places in trucks that should be identical. These were after all trucks,, mass produced trucks, build in the 60's. No robots, no lazers, no computers, and yes a truck built on a monday may also have the hangover factor built in. So, even the best new or old parts can take a while to line up....just thought I'd toss my $.02 in
