350 to 402 - What do I need for the swap?
I've got a chance at a decent 402 from a '70 Chevelle SS. I'm thinking that the motor would be alot of fun in my SWB. My '72 presently has a tired 350, 350TH, 3.73 diff. My question is: What kink of hardware would I need to do the swap? & Is the stuff readily available and resonably inexpensive? I think I'll need the following - BB crossmember, BB motor mounts, BB accessory brackets, and BB fanshroud. If this swap proves too expensive to source the hardware, I think I'll go with a 406 (30 over 400). Any comments are appeciated.

There is no such thing as a big block crossmember on these trucks.
You're right on the rest of it though. I did my swap last summer and let me tell you the price for big block brackets, pulleys, and other trinkets like correct fan shrouds is staggering.

It’s all out there and available you just have to be patient. I think I have ~$500 in the parts I needed to change over. $150 for mounts, $100 for Pulleys, $200 for Brackets and so on and so on. I'm almost done just need Intake and exhaust then In she goes

Not a bad swap, but as said earlier some of the parts can be a pain to get. The pulley issue can be solved by using the pulleys from a small block short water pump. Will need different fuel pump and water pump. The oil pressure line is different, the trans mount moves if you use the th400, the shifter linkage is different, and in different locale, drive shaft length will change and front yoke if th400. Same distributer. Mounts will be the toughest part to obtain. 68-71 stands still available from GM $35, but the pads are $75 per side, 72 pads are $14 per side but stands going for $85 and up depending on shape they are in. Then the exhaust will have to be changed- either headers or manifolds (manifolds can be difficult to locate w/o smog holes). The brackets are available- many of the same things were used on 67- down chevelles and big cars, biscayne and impalas. If you are set on big block you are going o throw some money down, if you have access to SB400 stay with small block and throw the extra money at it.... they can go real fast

Thanks for the feedback guys. My next move will be to see how complete the 402 is (in/ex manifolds, H20 pump, etc), and also compare purchase cost VS building a 406SB.
