adding a fuel cell/tank to the back doesnt make much difference, especially when there is no bed.

That's exactly what I am in the process of doing with my '72 with the same set up on a rear leaf truck, including the aluminum FCG tank. I too bought a wrecked '87 Camaro to get the TPI set up. Could I get you to send me the dimensions from the back of the frame rail to where you positioned the fuel tank? Did you remove the cross member in front of the gas tank so you could slide it forward? Thanks and great job!!!

I can get you dimensions on Monday, I am at work and we are heading out for the weekend after work.
I removed the crossmember that used to sit right where my tank is. The very rear one is in the stock location.
I will get you better pics and some measurements on Monday or Tuesday.

who did you get to reprogram the chip for you, and what kind of thermostat housing / hose did you use? I just found out the 86 computer I bought might be a 305 computer... The only difference between 350 and 305 is prom, so I figured maybe I could get someone to set me up with a 350 prom...

Shawn did a good thing going with the MAF set-up as opposed to the speed density. maf will work better with a larger cam or other mods. it bases the fuel & ignition curve on the quantity of air going in. the problem is in the intake ducting. its gonna take some creativity & possibly an elec. fan to make room for it all, but hey, thats more fun I think.

I found in my swap that the Injected T-stat housing was smaller than the Non-injected T-stat housing.I tried to use my orig. T-stat housing but it ended up pionting the wrong direction and interferred with the throttle linkage.

I found this one while a desk person at Car Quest let me look through his books.
Here's the Car Quest part number of the thermostat housing. The application is for a 64-78 Chevy truck with a 327ci engine.
Useing this T-stat housing will allow the use of you orig. upper rad hose.It's a bolt on swap.


Here you can see the difference between the two.


I migged a bead onto some aluminized pipe and made my own upper rad. hose after a while though.A little cleaner look I think.I just cut up my orig. upper rad hose and used the different angled pieces to make that new upper rad hose.

For those with running TPI, how were the increases in fuel mileage, driveability, cold starts, and power? I wouldn't mind TPI eventually on my truck......EFI rocks!

Cold starts are as expected with fuel injection.Rev's high initially on startup but settles down to about 1000rpm while warming then gradually idles down to whatever you've set your min. idle at.(approx. 600-750rpm).

I noticed a 50 mile increase in my milage.I have a stock 21-22 gallon tank and got approx 50 miles extra to my tankfull.That was highway and with my 700R4 working as it should.

Low end tourque is awesome.No stumble off the line at all.
It does peak out,as far as power goes,around the 5000-5500 rpm mark but that's what it was designed to do.
Stock TPI is not meant to be used in a high reving application.

Here's my TPI in my 71 Blazer.

This is a swap i defintely want to make soon. I had an 86 Corvette about 8 years ago and it was a dog when i bought it but after a few simple bolt on mods (and removing the cats) i was dusting mild LT1's. I really like the TPI set up. It is easy to work on and VERY SIMPLE.

I was wondering if one you you guys who have done the TPI swap on an older motor could post a detailed description of everything required and problems you incountered.

I know there is about 20 threads on this board and everyone links that one guys site but surely there is someone here who documented their own swap to tpi?

One question i had was about the distributor. Mine just went bad on my 350 (carb) so i ordered the msd dist and set for around $300 but now im sure i want to swith to tpi within the year and was wondering if i would be able to use this dist with a tpi set up?

Nope.If the one you bought has a vacume port on it.Tpi uses the ECM to advance and retard timeing.It's all done electrically.

Yes I run two 14" Perma Cool electric fans.
I used to have an aluminium shroud but I have since changed it and welded up a new one.

That is such a cool thing your doing man. I am not much of a gear head and these detailed instructions are perfect for me. My truck is in peices at the moment but im doing some wild custom interior stuff and when i get it done i'll post pics and give details on how i did it if anyone is interested.
