Original stuff might be available from SMS but the price for the OE fabrics is getting on up there. I got enough material to do the 3 buckets w/some left over for the visors & a sub box for less than a c-note.

Ken, the entire interior is getting color. It's mostly stripped down; still need to gut the dash (tomorrow).

I most likely will not use an "original" material because of the cost. Once I get a panel painted, I will go down to the local upholstry shop and look thru his stacks of samples and find one that is close enough...

I can't wait to see your interior color and the seats...

I'm doing the same thing only sdrawkcab.... I bought material I liked based on color, grain texture, & durability. I'll match the paint to the material so it's about as close as it can get. I put pics of the seat on a thread here before but the search didn't turn anything up (the pics are on my home computer).

Progess..... but no pics (gulp). The interior is in primer & blocking has started. I purchased some heater delete plates for the engine compartment (Vintage air or nothing....).

I brought the gauge cluster home to get some creative juices going. Leave it as is.... retro-fit something different..... aftermarket (nostalgic) . . .... choices to be made.

I also picked up the majority (all??) of the 're-assembly' hardware for the chassis. Still have alot to go but moving along regardless!

I would retrofit the gauges, and source an old Sun tach and air gauge. That would fit the theme the best to me.

Gauges for bags are tucked away, out of sight. I was looking to do the OE style in dash air gauge just for the 'rare' factor & use it for the tank pressure.

Because of the cost factor (300+) for 'restored' OE style gauges w/a re-pop tach, it's a harder decision w/brand new gauges (speedo, tach, oil psi, h2o temp, fuel level, & volts) coming in @ about $400 & change. Less than $100 difference in price but the OE look uses 45yr old gauges vs. the aftermarket units being new....

I'm just not a fan of tachs on the column. I prefer everything to match.

That's just a random pic to show possible gauge layout. Mine would be gauges w/a 60's look, in a tweaked OE bezel, w/the standard OE switches & knobs in place.


I absolutely would not use the Autometer style gauges for this build.

I think that I am going to keep my stock idiot light dash in mine, shooting for a no frills look on the interior...but with the updates like yours hidden (air management, a/c, stereo..etc).

I do like that 'gauge' dash in the posted pic..... but I'm not a fan of clocks used to fill gauge spots. That's why I've been looking for the air pressure gauge. The only air-press gauge I've found is cost prohibitive which sways the decision making toward brand new aftermarket gauges.

A dash done with the SW gauge you picture would be very cool too. Just no billet for the panel to mount them in. An aluminum panel that was PC with a satin black or black wrnkle finish would look good.

Stock panel that's modified is the intent.

I dislike the billet gauge panels that are commonly offered. There is one that I 'kind-of' like, but even it would require tweaking to fit my taste (I don't care for shiny/blingy stuff in the interior). Considering the price of the one I semi like, & then it still needs those tweaks.... I'll tweak the OE piece & still look good for ~$200 less.

I was just thinking the same thing . ..What to do with the holes if you moved the key and switches and lighter down ...or somewhere else ..I thought of maybe under the dash or in the space behind the ashtray (hinge the door)



Scoti -I had not thought of a insert panel with angle bend forward to hide the holes I just had seen the flat insert plate. Thanks for the idea ......
I saw a dash plate made from stainless plate from a commercial entry door (Toe kick plate). It was really shiny looked nice and I bet it could blind a driver if the sun hit it just right..
There was a white powder coated insert shown here on the forum a while back that looked OK I suppose you could powder coat just about any color or paint/ pinstripe /flame ETC around the gauges...

Well, I was down for the count this weekend w/my neck locked up & immobile (slept wrong & it went downhill quickly from there). So I did only minor stuff playing around w/the gauge layout. Looks like the cost effectiveness of new gauges trumps the 'cool' factor of originals.

I went by my buddies place today to check out the color on the interior. I'm very happy w/the results! It dawned on me today that the color is very close to 'silly putty'. There's still a little more to go but it's definitely moving @ a good pace. Working on getting the glass locally & still investigating seals (glass & doors; weatherstripping/felts/window channels) as I would like to get everything high quality from one source.

That's what I have laid out on my template. I started disecting the wiring groups so I can use some of the OE plugs & routing for 12v, lighting, & turn signals.

General concensus is Precision Rubber or Steele Rubber products are the way to go. N2billet had issues w/the 'Soft Seal' brand gasket for his front glass.

The 2 different 'old school' glass guys I'm waiting on quotes from said they would only use one of the two I listed.

Im a fan of vintage style aftermarket gauges. I really like the Autometer Street rod gauge sets. I think I will be using the Antique beige gauges in my truck.
