Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Here's a few more pics of the conversion. The thing is amazing! He has several years and 45,000 miles on it so far. He said the coolest thing about the project was when the body was done, you climb in and hit the key and away it goes! No reliability issues as its a new truck. He had to add a few inches to a few light wires and that was it. Pretty cool deal!! He had a really cool "GMC" insignia on the front, I forgot to take a pic of it. It was like GMCummins. Here is a link to a magazine article about it.

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Yes I am still alive!! I am starting to work on my interior stuff again. I wanted to find some kind of an antenna to put on top of the pickup that would work for am/fm/xm and be in one unit. Did a little digging and found out that my 08 Acadia has just such an antenna on it so I went to the junk yard and got one from an 08 acadia. It actually has 3 coax cables plus a 12 volt wire going to it. One coax is for am/fm and the 12 volt wire is in the connector with it, guessing it to have a powered booster in it. One coax is for Onstar and the third coax is for xm. I got a four foot am/fm coax cable from the local stereo place and the guy just cut, strip the ends and solder them together and make sure the inside wire doesnt touch the braided wiring on the outside. Got that one hooked up, will have to see if it works now. I am going to mount it near the back of the roof.

Nice work on the antenna, and nice to see your name pop up again. Did you blast around in the vette at all this summer?

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

I thought it looked familiar. My winter was the funnest in years! We got 2 feet of snow on Christmas eve and by monday night the whole area was infested with jack rabbits, tens of thousands of them. They hide out in the daytime and start showing up at dusk to munch on our hay stacks. It wasnt good that they were eating our haystacks but it was sure fun blasting them. We would go out at 8 pm and cruise around to everyones haystacks shooting rabbits till 2 or 3 in the morning. After a day or two I decided I need a new shotgun so I bought a Keltec tactical shotgun with a spotlight and green laser for it. That thing is so fun to shoot! Holds 15 rounds. Went through 700 shotgun shells and 2000 22 shells in about 6 weeks. When the snow started melting they migrated back to the desert. I am going through bunny withdrawals now.

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

I hadnt been outside Christmas day, had lots of family and grandkids to play with and monday afternoon my nephew calls me and tells me about all the rabbits that showed up. Sent me this pic of him and his 2 daughters, said they got these in one hour walking through a 1/4 mile of willow trees.

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

I was reading through your thread and was curious what kind of exhaust you are running on the crew cab build. Are you running 4" pipe all the way back? Was it a custom exhaust? Or did you buy a kit and modify it a little bit? I am needing to do the exhaust on my conversion.

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

I used all the exhaust from the school bus that the engine came out of and yes it is 4 inch all the way back. had it straight piped but when I put the bed on and found out I needed to drop the hitch a bit which then got it too close to the exhaust, I removed the pipe out from in front of the axle back and redid it over the axle. I havent put it back in yet but since its apart where a muffler would sit I am going to put a muffler in when I put the exhaust back together. My nephew put a complete 5 inch MBRP system on his 04 and I love the muffler on it, sounds great on the outside and quite on the inside and doesnt have a drone sound at any speed so I think I will get the 4 inch version of it for mine.

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

84Chevy on the bcm did you wire that in for the tow haul mode/reverse lights? I am curious if you got that working? I am doing a 2006 8.1 with the allison 6 speed and currently getting ready to tackle the idea of at least reverse lights for sure lol but would love to use the medium duty tow haul button I found lol

Thanks

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Sorry, havent been on here in a while. Just breezed through your build, pretty sweet! Looks like you got the back up lights figured out.
Its been so long since I thought about trans wiring that I cant remember what I had planned for back up lights and havent touched the pickup in months. I keep having things come up with my summers, in 15 I had to take care of my dad till he passed at Thanksgiving. Summer of 16 spare time was spent rebuilding and getting my 4850 JD tractor back together. This summer was for the pickup but I got side tracked yet again. There was lots of chatter locally about the Great American Eclipse starting after the first of the year. Local hotels were/did charge anywhere from 700 to 1200 a night for rooms minimum 3 or 4 nights required, people were renting out houses to out of town visitors for thousands of dollars a night, rv parks in the area were all sold out 6 months to a year in advance so I get this stupid idea that I should rent out some of my farm ground for overnight camping for eclipse visitors. How hard should that be, right? Well after I passed the point of no return as far as reservations were concerned I found out I couldnt get any porta potties without going out of state and then there wouldnt be any service for them so I ended up building a small restroom building. You know how when you start building something and you think, O I should do this while I am at it, well that kicked in and I ended up with 2 bathrooms with flush toilets and sinks with hot and cold running water and shower(s) out the back wall, heated water with a little on demand propane water heater. Decks and framing is pressure treated wood, all stained/sealed inside, exterior is red tin with white trim and a green roof (going for the old barn look). Dug a big hole and tied two 250 gallon totes together to catch black water and let the grey water run in the hole around the tanks. Rooms are lit by solar powered led motion lights as well as yard lights and the shower area. Had to run a 400 foot water line out from my old dairy barn for water and used the old dairy manure sump pump to keep tanks emptied out during the weekend. I planted wheat criss cross in the field where the rv/campers would be so it was about 8 inches tall when everyone showed up. Planted sweet corn on one side of the field to use that weekend but it didnt get ready in time. I included a "potato bar" dinner Sunday evening with reservations as there isnt anything open here on Sundays. Did baked potatoes, chilli, cheese, ect, ect and sweet corn and a roll. Fed about 200 people Sunday and had around 350 people there by eclipse time Monday morning. Estimates are over one million visitors that came to southeast Idaho to view the eclipse. Traffic afterwards was amazing, a one hour drive home for one of my daughters took 4 hours. A 4 hour drive to Salt Lake City took 12+ hours. It was literally bumper to bumper on the interstate and on any side road you could think of for hours and hours. It was a hell of a lot of work but was pretty cool in the end, got to meet lots of really nice people with some amazing equipment. Had guests from France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Canada, and all the western United States as well as several eastern states. There was a guy from NASA that camped for the weekend and he is a presenter and did several presentations for guests, had meteors found in Idaho, moon and mars rocks, was pretty cool to see! Had a Japanese film crew that shot IMAX quality film footage for a Japanese science organization, they were using 8K cameras with computer tracking equipment, pretty cool stuff! The eclipse itself was amazing to watch, the temp dropped a good 15 degrees and we were all surprised how dark it got. First pic is of part of the campers, I had just gotten my hay off and I had them scattered all over the east half of my farm. Second pic is of the traffic trying to leave, it was seven miles from the back of traffic to the junction for the freeway.
So yeah, that was where my summer went. I got a week or so to get my haying equipment ready to go and its back to doing 3rd crop hay. Maybe in October I can get back on my pickup...

Chevy lol that's badass sorry to hear about your family member that sucks. Yeah I got the Allison 5 speed backup switch working solidly the other day so quite happy with it. I will live without tow haul button lol just put her in manual mode for towing.

Wow, great job on all of that! That sure was a lot of work but that should be a great side income for you to help off set this horrid dry no crop producing weather the entire western half of the country got. I thought about you last week when those fires were all out west hoping you were no where near any of them!
