Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

next time bring a m3player and some earbuds or small speakers
as long as the vehicle has a 12 volt hookup to put the charger in you will have tunes
a smarphone works too and it has satnav

another option is keep driving next to another car that has stereo with the windows down :P bet that will give some weird looks

No 12v power in this truck but I had a buddy along to chat with.

Drug the plow out and hooked it up.

Hooked up, bled and ready to go. The plow works great and snow is in the forecast. I'm not too excited about the flatbed though...

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Mother Nature has obliged me by providing a steady stream of snow since I got the plow truck going. I even got to use the lift gate to transfer my tools, recovery gear and chains over from the '91. That proved to be useful since 2 hours later I was pulling a duramax with a v-plow out of the ditch. I didn't snap any pics of that as traffic was backed up. Thinking I might just need to do a thread for this truck...

I love old plow trucks. My dad tells stories of the 65 chevy he built when he lived in south east Alaska.

Cool, where did your dad live? I grew up in Juneau. Wet heavy snow down there.

Yeah just keep working craigslist and the auction sites 24-7! We are really fortunate up here in the interior that there is so little rust. Almost a southwest of the north. The same can not be said of the new plow truck. It has a little cancer. Still not bad for it's age and purpose.

bit off topic but i wonder if you can use ski wax to prevent the snow from clumping up on the blade

I bet it would help. It's been really warm for the past week so it's unusually sticky. It all falls off when you drop the blade and it impacts the ground.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Received good news from the machine shop yesterday. Blocked cleaned up with a hone, crank with a polish, and heads just needed a surface and a valve job. Cam bearings and freeze plugs are getting knocked in, and hopefully start reassembly after xmas.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

nice....... allways good that the expected outlay turns out less
did they found anything special like a higher strength block (heared some blocks have a higher carbon content) or better rods and stuff like that ?

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Nope, just a factory block. They don't have the rods, just the block, crank and heads.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Man, I didn’t realize your new flatbed plow truck was a 292! Now I really wish you lived closer so I could take that truck off your hands when your done with it. That is so cool and rare as hens teeth to find a K30 with a 292 let alone a 292 backed by an auto in a 4x4. Post up some pics of the engine when you get time. I would love to build something with a 292. For some reason I really love straight 6’s. There is a kid I know that has a solid running 292 with engine mounting brackets and all out of a ’70 for $350. I want it so bad but have nothing to put it in at the moment. Sorry for the derail, I just got excited when I noticed your sig listed the 292 in the flatbed. Glad the L29 is coming along well

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Yeah it is pretty unique. You don't see a lot of K30 SRW's around here that aren't crew cabs or CUCV's. I already have the crew cab covered.

The truck was purchased new by the school district, so I am the second owner. The 1984 title looked like it was about to crack and break in half. Advertisement said it had a 250 in it, but that was not offered in a K30 I don't think, build sheet shows 4.8L and the fuel pump is in the center of the engine, which I read is specific to the 292 vs. 250 or 230.

This thing is really growing on me. The 292 combined with 4.56 gears pulls and pushes snow like a mule. I think I just need to accept it and start a build thread. IF I do keep it, I'll ditch the flat bed / lift gate for a regular bed, then pretty much freshen everything up as is. It has a little rust on the front inner fenders, driver's rocker, seat has holes on the driver's side, driver's gas tank is inop, I don't like the big truck battery (and associated hood clearancing) and various dents and scratches. The motor starts in the cold, runs great, but gets terrible mileage (5-7) and diesels on shut down when hot. It needs some gauges too. Time will tell.

Yeah yeah yeah Not going to be much flow to put towards this until the L29 project is done, but maybe just a tinkering thread...

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Man, that truck is just too cool. I love it with the flatbed and lift gate. That would be so handy around here for junkyard and Lowe’s runs. Put a 2” lift on her and mount up some Q78s on those stock wheels and it would probably do better on fuel for highway cruising with those deep 4:56 gears and look cool too. I’m sure you’ll get the little bugs worked out when you get some time. Being it came from a school district explains why they installed that big battery, so it would be common with the buses. I’d be peeling off the smog stuff first thing. Stay warm up there!

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Thanks Larry. The flat bed / lift gate might have to be sacrificed to help convince the CFO this is a value proposition. We will see.

You win Dave, build thread link below.

Very frustrating. I have seen sites where you can't tell whether it is showing you how many you need or if that is how many come in a pack. Good thing you are near the North Pole and Christmas is just around the corner. Your still making more progress than I am.

Oh, I went through that on cam bearings for my 8.1L. Each sold individually. How dumb is that??

Seriously. I like using GM parts, but I can't pay $440 for a set of rings and $220 for a set of rod bearings. Clevite here I come.
