Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside

Its kinda stalled right now. I had to put my Mom in the nursing home. Shes been with us for 14 yrs and its been pretty hard on us. Shes real close to us though so we can pop in whenever we want.
thats been taking most of my time. I'll try to do some on it next week maybe, if nothing else happens

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside

I started cleaning up the rearend but it started raining so I quit and moved it back inside. I'll get to that later. I decided that the gmc core support that I had was too rough. So I just cut the headlight mounts by drilling the spot welds and I'll put them on the nice core support that I have. It started out as a 72 chevy support. I took the mounts off of it and used it on my 68 frontend. Now it'll be a gmc support.
1st pic is of the rusty gmc support. 2nd is the headlight mounts off. 3rd is the good support that will get the mounts.

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside

Chuck....would you have time to do a "how-to" on converting a Chevy core support to a GMC core support.....I think it would be helpful to others...I've seen several people wondering how to do this!.....Prayers sent for your Mother, you and family too!

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside

Well I got something going today. I decided to do the gmc core support while the rearend was drying.
In the first pic- is the core support that I want to convert. Its rust free and I wanted to use it.
2nd pic -I started by marking the edges of the brackets with a nail so I could measure exactly where they were on the original support.

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside

So after measuring and transfering them to the good support, I marked them with tape. I then marked where the holes were and ground those marks off. I double checked my measurements and welded them on.

I got the rearend in and the cab on. The wife helped. (notice the wrench in her hand) I think she wants her parking spot back in the basement.

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside

Thanks guys. I made that out of a couple pieces of angle. It works pretty good. In the past I made one of those cab/bed lifts and it worked much better as it makes it more stable. I sold mine like an idiot.

heres a few more and a silohette ha ha

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside

Thanks guys! I am excited to get the cab on but I still need to do some things that I should have done before puting it on like finish the fuel and brake lines. But I'll get it done. I'm jones'n to ride in an old truck again. I like the Silverado but theres nothing like an old truck.

I also did a little trick that I like to do with my core support bolts. I weld the bolt to the square washer just to make it easier to put together.

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside

No damage at all. It has good hinges and pins. I checked it numerous times and nothing has moved or gotten out of shape. This makes the third time moving it this way and all is perfect. They open and close great. gaps are still good too. If I had loose hinges or hinge pins I would remove the doors.
