For fear of stepping out of bounds and having a forum monitor jump down my throat, I hesitate to mention names of businesses, hint of trying to sell something etc...
However, Johns (the neighbor) truck is a GMC, 65 and as a GMC a leaf rear suspension.
(63-66 GMC was only available with leaf rear)
63-87 rear ends all are a direct bolt in with leafs.
Looking at the photos of Roberts diff and then walking next door and taking a peek under Johns truck, he has a 12 bolt, it was updated by a company in downtown Phoenix that deals with diffs exclusively and has for decades. Very knowledgable folks.
I should have looked at Roberts photos before commenting. My mistake....

Still haven't got the brakes totally worked out on my 66, but I just needed to do something on my 65 today.
Got all the old carpet scraps and fiberglass insulation crap job tore out of the cab.
Took the air-cleaner off and gave the carb and good cleaning with Gunk Carb Cleaner.
Engine runs nice now.
Next will be getting the brakes good, and then I can drive it some this summer.
I will be doing this to tide me over until the winter when I upgrade to front discs:

Built me a pressure bleeder out of stuff I had lying around.
Worked great to bleed the brakes.
Used it on my 66, and now on my 65.

Got the brakes worked out and gave her a good wash.
Engine runs really nice.
I'm good for now.
I'll tinker on the body & interior here and there until winter when I plan to upgrade the front to discs.

The brand is Modern.
They were on it when I bought her back.
I've done some searching and can't find them.
There's a couple members here that also have them. One member has the 5-lug, and another has the 5 spoke. Mine has 6 lugs and 6 spokes.

I replaced the turn signal mechanism in the steering wheel today and seem to have developed a problem with the coupling.
The steering wheel turns but it doesn't turn the wheels.
The shaft spins inside this coupling:

That is kinda strange.
Maybe mine is different because of the year but mine is one shaft from the wheel to the rag joint on my steering gear box.
Too bad you are so far away. I have a couple of stock columns laying around here.

Yeah, my 66 is one solid shaft.

The photo is showing GM’s version of a sliding steering column U-joint (plagued with quality problems/recalls in the intermediate shaft version). It appears yours has either broken or pulled apart. The arrow is pointing to what appears to be the cross shaft that should be riding in the side slots marked with the X’s. This disconnect could have resulted in a catastrophic failure on the road, and needs some serious investigation/repair.

If the shaft heading to the steering box is solid with no rag joint at the bottom, you may be able to buy a Borgeson joint that fits the splines on the bottom of the steering column, and the other end matches the lower shaft splines. And if the distance between the end of the two shafts if too far for a standard u-joint, and vibration reducer may fit perfectly in the same spot. It might be worth a call or an email to them for some advice.

I found the issue.
I guess when I pulled up on the shaft to remove the steering wheel, the whole column moved up because the bolts holding the column in place were loose.
I got things lined up and slid the column back down.

are those swiveling union couplers thingies really dangerous? damn i thought that they were the way to go when changing to power in the box steering. just last weekend i got one from salvage... what is the best way to use the couplers, what will make them safer?

Any specs or more pics of the pressure bleeder? I'd like to make me something like that.

It's just a cheapo garden sprayer I had laying around.
I had some pressure gauges from an old job I did years back.
A small chunk of wood with a piece rubber.
And a length of hose and a couple clamps.
It was a crude slap together - but it works great.
