Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

I'd also check the wear patterns on the rod where it was wedged under the crank. It could have very well thrown the rod long before the 'goose' into the snowbank, just the bump from impact knocked the piston further down into the cylinder where the rod then wedged itself in the position you found it.

Otherwise I'm stumped. :P

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

Yeah I have just the info that my dad tells me. My dad said the motor was done right when my uncle goosed it into the snowbank.P are you saying the crank wore that much in a instant.
I belive one bearing was in the case. My dad pulled the junk piston I wasn't in the shop.
And he sleeps.
The rod cap is In two pieces.
All the other bearings seem to be in good shape. Should have checked my crank play.

The crank spun a bearing tho. So you could be right

Is the crank junk because of all the wear.

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

well throwing the rods bearings could explain marks on the head and piston right.
And when he goosed it the rod broke and snapped the cam.
And there she sat.

The rod is kinda pounded I can look for wear.

How about the 180 degree intake?

Thanks for your help bud.^^^^^^^^

Oh yes an go back a page to view lots of pics.

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

Chances are it was a spun rod bearing that finally gave up the ghost when the truck hit the snowbank.

The wear on the head has me perplexed though... is there any damage to the valves? You'd think that if the piston had contacted the head enough to actually score it, there's be some kind of valve damage, but I had trouble telling from the photo.

The damage is a combination of long-term wear and an abrupt meltdown when conditions were right. Somebody more knowledgeable can help shed more light on this... my dad was a mechanic for 30-some-odd years, and while I've done my share of wrenching, I'm far from an expert on things.

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

To answer your questions... (you posted while I was writing)

Crank... junk. That wear is too excessive to do anything to it, judging by the photo.

Block... probably junk too. You might be able to sleeve those cylinders, depending on how close the water jackets are to the cylinder walls, but you're probably better off just tearing apart the 69 and seeing what you have to work with there.

Heads... it depends. With the wear mark from the piston, and any possible valve seat damage, it may or may not be junk. Once again, somebody more experienced with rebuilding heads could be of more assistance than myself.

The intake manifold looks like it's for a quadrajet carb or similar, that has small primaries and larger secondaries. It may be worth something to the right person, since quadrajets are a nice fuel-efficient carb, they just get a bad rap because they're more difficult to tune correctly than more user-friendly carbs.

I have a quadrajet on my 327, that I'm planning on rebuilding in the next couple of weeks, after we move house this weekend.

Good luck on your project... I've read through this whole thread, and I wish I had the skills you do at your age. Keep it up, you're doing some nice work.

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

No valve damage at all. Mark on piston and head. Not much must have only hit once. The whole thing puzzles me. And you would think after the cam broke a valve would hit the piston.

I'm gonna ask my shop teacher tomorrow.

I wish my dad knew more haha. I like this project. I can't wait to tear into that 69 350.

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

Thanks for all the answers David. u have been a big help.
I figured it was all junk. Should i hang it up or scrap it all? haha

And it's nice to know someone looks at this thread I feel like I'm clogging up the board sometimes.

I just jump in and do it this truck has taught me more than how to drive.

I'm tearing down motors.. Sweet.

I took a class this semester called trans power 2. first shop class I took in high school. We're tearing down lawn mower motors, brigs and strat. I have mine all the way tore down already were as the rest of the class is far behind still trying to figure out how to take the plastic shrouds off. Haha I guess motors make sense..
At least something does.

Thanks again David.
Got a build thread?

doesnt seem like a horrible motor besides for the rod and what not.

the head you can see where the piston scored the head...

did a lot of work on the bed today.. welded footings on and drilled holes and painted. showed my little brother a thing or two about welding

hopefullly i get that 69 block home and its a lot nicer than this one...

Still wondering what caused the crank to wear so bad?
was the engine running on 7?

I'm just gonna take it as it is. my uncle wrecked it and its garbage now haha.
maybe i can get some money for scrap...
no sense in trying to figure out why or what happened.. still i wonder.....

I also am glad i had this motor to take apart before i start on that 69 block because i made some mistakes like keeping track of parts. that i wont make when disassembling the 69 block.
here is a couple pics i took last weekend of the 69. and the blazers 350

Read above.

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

me being a huge L6 fan i have to say one last thing before you commit to that v8. i just read an article about how if you don't have a muffler you lose a ton of throttle responce and develope a lack of acceleration w/ out a muffler due to lack of back pressure, since your runnin a open header, i'd at least try to throw a cheap turbo muffler on it or something to see if power improves, because my stock 250 six is pretty dang peppy.

haha man, just sayin, but do whatever makes you happy, if you want the v8 do it! at least you ain't driven a POS ricer. lol

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

haha at least don't have a ricer, i still burn rice in my dirt bikes but that's all good

i know that if i was running a muffler it would improve the acceleration and torque. 20 bucks and i could have myself a cheap glass pack. ill see i know what back pressure does for a motor. Having a bunch of 2 strokes with that big expander on them i get it.

I still think rebuilding a v8 sounds like a lot of fun. Plus the plan is to pull that 69 350 and put my 250 into my dads truck to get her running again.. ha true rat rod, patina on that old girl. i would leave it as is.. lack of floors and all. haha.

i just wonder what this truck would be like with 100 more horses,

maybe get a posi...

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

Hell yeah it would!!!
i would leave everything as is the tires would even air up. Cause its sitting on blocks so they aren't cracked.
sometimes i wonder why i didn't just restore that one.. but then again it is such a rot rod.
you cant even find the floor boards and the seat is gone..

i'd drive the hell out of it for a while and build up some courage to tackle that rust, but its always nice to have a truck you can beat the sh#@ out of and just not worry bout it lol

Let's hear the exhaust man!

And yes, build the 350 like you want it. A stock 350 will more than push your pickup, probably more than enough to get you in trouble.

Good work as always, it's really coming along. As for the 2 wheeled jobs...well. Thats pretty neat too.

Clip to come. I'm having some real trouble getting the exhast to seal at the manifold.
I know some sixers read this thread.
Anybody want to let me in on how your manifold looks when it connects to the down pipe.
Is there a donut in between the 2.
Any help is apprciated. This is really bothering me.

Someday for the 350 buildup.

Thanks Sam. 2 wheels are fun.

My cousin just got a 77 jeep hah thing is pretty cool. I'll have a pic of it.
