I like the idea of buffing them up and coating in Gibbs, but I'm not sure I'd have the enthusiasm to keep up with the periodic maintenance. |

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I started the patina process, and the stepside bed is the "test bed", so to say. The process has thus far been a one step forward, one step back process.
First step was to clean all the "Gibbs" off the parts that I had covered them in last November (basically just wiped the parts off with xylene). The Gibbs did a really good job of protecting the parts for the last 7 months. The plan is to go with Sherwin Williams Industrial products. There is a Sherwin Williams nearby and when I explained to the guy that manages the store what I was doing he seemed genuinely interested in this project. He set me up with some Sherwin Williams Kem-Flash Primer E61 R 26. When I first started using it I realized it dries way to quick, which makes brush and roller application practically impossible (Remember its a Patina paint job... that's how it's done). So then I read the "Application Data Sheet and it specifically states "spray only due to short dry time" (imagine that, read first dummy! ) It's also too red (see photo below), needs to be more of a brownish tint for the patina effect to look correct. Using my trusty "strip disc" and angle grinder I removed the 3 day old Kem-Flash. In the process I realized just how good the primer adhesion was. It took roughly twice as long to remove the new primer than the original paint and primer. Next up: Sherwin Williams Kem Kromik primer. It is slower drying and is more of a brown shade of red oxide primer. Bare with me on this guys. I know some of you think faking weathered paint is dopey, and using a brush and roller is even worse. But its a challenge I want to try. Here are a couple photos, lots more to come as things progress....
While the truck was out basking in the sunshine I did a quick walk around and interior video too. Other than making a dash pad the interior is done. Last edited by lakeroadster; 06-16-2011 at 10:14 AM. |

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I had good luck doing black, then brown, then the color, then a white mist. Use steel wool to rub it down on all the flat spots. I also kinda mixed the colers together when I was spraying it. If you don't like one spot it's easy to just repaint that one spot and kind blend it all together. On my 52 I had two blue fenders you can't even tell any more. My 64 is almost all fake.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I would still like to do a fake patina on mine, but I'm torn because it would be nice to have a shinny truck again (it's been a while for me).

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Replaced some ugly firewall fasteners. Soaked the hood hinges and springs in TSP for several hours, scrubbed 20 years of crud off them. Tomorrow they'll get a bath in CLR. After that some light sanding should make them ready for new paint.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Cut out the old factory bump stops, and replaced them with some energy suspension 1 inch universals. Also put in a pair of new Belltech shocks up front. Now she has suspension travel and rides better than she did before I dropped her. Pics will be posted to my build thread as soon as I can get time on a computer.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Primed the step side bed components today with Sherwin Williams Kem-Kromik brown (red-oxide) primer. It really lays down nice and the color was spot on, at least IMO, for “Hot Rod Primer”. Used a 4 inch roller and a brush and will be applying at least one more coat. (Fauxtina Paint Job).

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Installed Lokar E-brake cables, new E-brake hardware, new 5 lug rear axles, new drums, put differential cover back on, filled it with fluid, put the wheels and tires on, and set it on the ground for the first time in months. I'm starting to believe I might even drive it again someday! I did receive my Tremec Tko 600 a few days ago too.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
When I first did the engine compartment back in 1992 I stripped everything to bare metal and started from there. I didn’t put all that much effort into the area under the inner fenders. I just gave them a good scrubbing and a shot of black paint to cover the yellow. Later some areas got a layer of Body Schutz undercoating. Brake fluid at some point also wrinkled a large area below the clutch master. With the open fenderwells it became obvious the firewall needed a lot more work to look decent.
So a couple days ago I soaked everything in degreaser and this morning had at it with a power washer. It blew off about 95% of the undercoat and black paint covering the original yellow. The paint and undercoat must have done a pretty decent job because there still isn’t any rust or cancer to deal with, just a lot of nasty residue to remove and clean up. Now I can finally get started on prepping for paint. I’m going to clean up everything the best I can without much disassembly and then spray it all gloss black. With the hood off it’s easy for me to envision how cool it would look with a dual quad 6-71 supercharger (or tunnel ram), and fenderwell headers sitting out in the breeze. Maybe after I win the lottery! Here’s what it looked like right before paint back in 1992: And here’s what it looks like as of today: |

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Hey Mark that was the same time I went thru mine, only in `93, when I had a lot more energy, 6 weeks from start time to driving, that was stripping, painting, new door parts, engine, trans and alum bed...been driving the begeezes out of it sense then, just a little over a 120,000 miles on it, its time to do it all over again, this time big block, muncie, and air...maybe

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I got bored, so I built a center console out of scrap wood and used the vinyl from my kick panels and doors to cover it. Still need to make the top, but I dig it.
