The Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) is a battery-powered four-wheeled rover used on the Moon in the last three missions of the American Apollo program (15, 16, and 17) during 1971 and 1972. It is popularly called the Moon buggy, a play on the term dune buggy.

Built by Boeing, each LRV has a mass of 460 pounds (210 kg) without payload. It could carry a maximum payload of 1,080 pounds (490 kg), including two astronauts, equipment, and lunar samples, and was designed for a top speed of 8 miles per hour (13 km/h), although it achieved a top speed of 11.2 miles per hour (18.0 km/h) on its last mission, Apollo 17.

the point is, you can have other cars and use them accordingly, you wouldn't take a Miata to go get dirt, rocks, or bark for your landscaping

and how often do you go to Dallas, be honest, you don't have to post it here I am just sayin' cause we went down to LA like once every 3 years, we could have flown there, we could have used a rental car, etc

and the other point is that it used to be that most "Americans" only drove 40 miles a day, now it's down to only 25 miles per day, so there's that

anyway not trying to argue I am just making an effort to share what I have observed over the last decade or so, people's behaviors views of electric vehicles are changing but it will take time
Your argument is valid, but we're talkin' hot rods. Lots of truck stuff in Texas and I have friends/relatives there. Hoping to sneak down there this year. History shows the hot rods go to Wichita, Springfield, (220 mi.) and Ottawa, KS (75 mi) pretty regularly, and often at 85-90+. I ain't going in my Kia to these doin's.

If we're talking standard cars, sure, I just bought a Kia Soul to buzz around in. Love it. But it ain't my 87 SWB, or the 67 SWB, or the 04 Duramax CC SWB that I just got all the parts to drop and hotrod. I very seriously considered a Leaf to lease (now that they don't look like a 5-year old lost a coloring contest to design one), but I drive 60+ miles a day (putting me over), and didn't want a $450+ car payment.

My other pain point is that everyone that argues for these cars acts like it's the most natural thing in the world to go 100-150 miles and plug in (if you can) and fart around for 25-45 minutes. These people have not rolled with me. I've been known to roll in, gas the bike, grab a Gatorade out of the cooler, chug it while peeing, pay, and gone. I'm an hourly worker. If I'm taking off, I got places to be, and s#it to do. Standing around waiting for my EV to charge ain't one of them.

Again, I harbor no ill will toward the technology at all, other than when it's crammed down my throat. I'm fascinated with your project, wish you every success, and eagerly await your next well-described missive.

although the latter part of this video gets rather specific on how to configure an open source electric vehicle controller aka it's aftermarket brain if you will, I think some of you may find the first 75% of the video interesting in terms of the technology used to achieve it

well I couldn't sleep so I punched some numbers into the good ol' Lotus 1-2-3 (pronounced: Excel) ha ha to correlate RPMs to Miles Per Hour based on my 3.73 rear end and 215/65R-17 wheels

I relied on the good ol' folks at x-engineer.org to provide the complicated formulas, (and our daughter to recite pi to the 57th digit):

and yes these motors can spin above 10,000 RPMs easy

Question: If the motor is built into a transmission, does the trans work? Or is the locking out I'm seeing lock the trans into the 1:1 gear? In other news, check out the autotopia LA channel. Someone put half a P10 into a very nice Cobra., and holy crap, does that thing run! 90-100 mile range, but that'd be enough for weekend ripping around.

Here is how I understand it, correct me if I am wrong I am not an expert and this is some voodoo stuff for sure, see the following article to see what I am really trying to explain: The Lexus GS 450h Hybrid System

There are two electric motors inside this Lexus GS450h transmission relying on a power split device. Each one has it's own set of Planetary Gears. The car uses a two-stage motor speed reduction device. We lock the input shaft which is only connected to the first motor what they call a Generator in the first diagram below and refer to it as MG1 (yellow wheel) in the second diagram.

The hybrid system in the GS 450h supports both high output and high vehicle speed. To engage the low gear range, Toyota opens the conventional planetary gearset’s brake 1 and locks brake 2, resulting in a reduction gear ratio of 3.900. For high gear, brake 1 is locked and brake two is open, with a reduction gear ratio of 1.900.

FYI: Most guys like me who do the EV Conversion using this transmission always leave it in High gear.

for safety reasons you can't just hook up a Multimeter to a high voltage battery pack, you essentially need a car battery to turn on this battery

that's why we remove the lid and bypass the Pre Charge Circuit which contains contactors that otherwise have to be powered up, but this being a German product it ain't all that easy without fandangling with the BMS first I think, so forget that

not bad, that's 346 out of 351 vultures

I did the same to only one of the six cell modules that are inside that battery pack

57.7 out of 58.5 that's pretty darn good

I also took the opportunity to weigh one of them, and it came in at 27.7 pounds

so six of them only weigh 166 lbs, so if I double that it will be 332 pounds

anybody know what a fully dressed Small Block Chevy weighs for a stare and compare?

thanks so that covers three of these packs which adds up to 498 pounds.

I am thinking we could add another 100 pound allowance for a full 16 gallon fuel tank full of gasoline (16 gallons x 6 lbs = 96 pounds) plus 10 lbs for 6 quarts of oil, plus the weight of the exhaust system and I think we are breaking even, even with four battery packs at 665 pounds.

Think it is cool what you are doing. Electric performance and torque is real.
None the less I would never own an electric or do a conversion myself except for a local driver.
Curious if you know what the motor/trans weighs. My aluminum block LSA 6.2 with 6l90 is in 700lb range. The 31 gallon tank I am installing full is around 200lbs. 31 gallons should allow over 400 miles range as long as I keep my foot out of it. What is the range you are expecting?

Nice video. I did not realize the batteries were in series but I suppose that makes sense to get the higher potential. What is the voltage and variance that the motors are rated for?

the stock Lexus GS450h (the car my motors came from) hybrid battery pack was only something like 288 volts, but that car used a booster converter to up it to as high as 650 volts (to push lower amps) Rated for a combined 250kW output, meaning using gasoline powered engine plus only the single electric motor in the transmission (more on this later) that's 375 horse power.

the pack I am using is from a different plug in hybrid car a BMW 530e which had a 350 volt battery pack. Based on the world's #1 best selling electric car, the Tesla Model 3 and the world's #2 best selling electric car the Nissan Leaf that's all we need as they both run 350 volt packs. It's what I call a full voltage pack. Of course they have a much larger fuel tank capacity if you will than my little 9.1 kWh one.

yes I plan on running possibly four packs in parallel for a total of still 351 volts but quadrupling the kilo watt hours from 9.1 to 36.4 kWh

of course you are talking about power and I am focusing on capacity, I get that

but the thought of doubling the voltage to over 700 volts did enter my mind if for nothing else a shot down a drag strip [Note To Self: upgrade front drum brakes to disc, lol]
