Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

Got rest of fuel system installed today. Ran wires and removed old pump and rod. Have pump set at between 3.5 and 5 psi. It kind of moves around depending on what rpm motor is at due to crappy alt. At ldle it only has like 12.8 v but at anything over idle it has 13.8 or so. You can deff tell the pump is on. It is a little loud but i will try to install some more rubber so it has no contact with anything and maybe it will quiet down. Runs great still. Punched it to almost 70 mph and did not run out of fuel so i guesss it is going to work out.

Thats one less thing you'll have to do for the swap!

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

That is my goal. I just want to wire in alt and msd box and drop motor in. I have to drive it everyday now. Only will have the week end to do hole swap. Will most likaly be doing it in bros drive way. All i need is new pump and get v bands welded on to headers.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

I'd leave yourself a little room for a plan B...just in case. PS pump isn't what I really wanted since its for hydroboost (might modify it?), my flexplate should have fit my torque converter...but didn't and I had to drill it, there might be linkage issues, etc.

at least you don't have to worry about efi issues!

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

The only thing i am worried about is the headers. The mounts i am using are with in 1/8th of inch from factory sbc. The flexplate is already redrilled and not that big of a deal. My bro is very smart when it comes to wiring. I hope i can figure out how to hook up the msd box....it has like 3 wires. I am sure something will come up but it will have to be small cause my carb already kind of works and my fuel system is in and functioning proberly. The only trouble will be if i forget to adjust valves and put oil in dang thing. We have a 7 day a week junk yard if i need maniflods or anything. I plan for january sometime. My bro is pushing me to get it in cause he is going to build a motor and is posibly thinking of ls swap. He in not convinced they make any kind of power at all. I HOPE to show him they do. As you can see by my excessivly long post i a very nervious about this hole thing working right. If it does not i not sure what i am going to do.....Prob start drinking a lot..... My plan B is to put junk sbc back in and cry alot........

Does yours breath fire yet?

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

Is there any way to make an electic pump run consistant rpm. At idle it sounds like it is too slow but if i rev engine pump also speeds up. Heck thing even works with my blinker speeding up and down with every blink. Also is making setting fuel psi hard. If pump is slow psi is down but if i rev engine psi goes up. Like a resister or conpaseter or something.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

Sounds like you need a better power feed wire (using 10ga?) or a better ground to the frame, with no paint under the contact?

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

My truck only puts out 12 something at ldle then if you tap the gas at all it goes up to 14 or so. So it is getting constant batt voltage. The wire i am using is not 10 but it is prety thick. maybe 12-16 or so. I have seen the relay kits the sell but not sure if the wires will go to the back where my pump is located. Maybe i will save up for that kit. Thanks.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

Well went to almost every parts store in town today and finaly got my ps pump for a 01 chevy 1500 5.3 2wd. Was like 65 plus core and tool rental. Got installed in a bout 5 mins and slaped belt on. All i have left is header collector welding and install my temp fittings and stuff for oil change. What color coolant are yall going to be running?

Where is the fuel pump relay getting its power from?

Does not have a relay. Could not find a relay wire kit at auto stores. It is comming from my fuse box under dash in an ignition power spot. Then goes to a fuse then switch then to pump. It only requires a 7.5 amp fuse. I am going to get it a relay some time. Not sure if it will do any thing for my problem or not. I looked at my psi gauge and at high idle it was 6 and after i got home from work with light and heat on and volt gauge reading under 13 it was still a 6psi. Guess it does not matter if the pump is going fast or slow the reg will still only put out 6 right now. Will set float level and idle mix again this week end if i have a chance due to having diff fuel psi then when carb was first installed. Sadly still has hesitation...Did not think pump would fix it tho.

That is a whole bunch of the voltage fluctuation problem. The fuel pump needs as much voltage as you can give it and coming out of the fuse box it doesn't get much and the amps are low too.

Find a front wheel drive donor rig that has one of the oval shaped weather-pak style 30-amp electric fan relays with a long 10-gauge power wire. Early 90's or so. Take all the wire you can get out of the donor rig along with the relay so you don't have to splice the main power supply wire.

Run the power supply wire for it through a 30-amp breaker and connect that directly to the battery. The breaker will trip if grounded out but reset when the problem is corrected so you won't get stranded by a blown fuse.

Mount it as close to your fuel pump as you can get it so the smaller gauge feed wire from the relay to the fuel pump is as short as possible.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

since you're not running efi your fuel pump isn't as big of an issue. I plan on running mine wired direct to an ign lead on my Painless Circuit Boss....which is fused, breakered, and relayed.

That is one fancy circuit boss. My only has ign port with no fuse or relay. I do have it fuesed and switched so it can be shut off if i need to sit with the key on engine off for some reason. I would still like to put a relay so i can get power direct from the batt connection and have it come one with key. I am not that worried about it any more due to fuel psi staying the same all the time.

Got to install my sensor adapters today. Forgot my dang oil psi sensor at the house tho...dang it. Moved plug from passenger side head to driver side head then installed coolant sensor in the pass head. Looks cleaner i think. Also checked plugs in old motor and reset idle mix and float levels.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

Well after readjusting my idle mix and float level i drove it to work today and seems to me the problem with the hesitation is compleatly gone... Kind of funny. Not sure why or how it is compleatly gone. But it is. Still does not have any more power on the hiway after like 65 if you put some throttle in to it. Maybe my secondarys are not opening due to the heavy spring i put in it. Oh well. If it stays how it is i will be happy. At least tell i put motor in.
