Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

Thanks guys.

I was planning to go to Pep Boys looking for some kind of thin tubing. DUH, I never thought of a giveaway inner tube. Excellent idea!

Kim,
Yes, it'll be nice to use it on the weekends. I'm going to want to drive it to work on the occasional Friday too but I've got a few things to accomplish before I can do that safely:

Seat belts
Get the CPP disc brake kit in (I already have it)
Install a manual dual master cylinder & proportioning valve
Emergency brake connected
Move gas tank out of the cab!

Obviously, a couple of those are higher dollar items or the tools to accomplish them right are - flaring tool and tube bender. But I want to do these things myself.

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

Looks good; period correct; I like the ivory around the window.
Don't think of it as Mickey Mouse painting.........think more in terms of a "utilitarian protective coating".
Good job.
The little tools, nuts & bolts, parts & pieces and rattle cans add up. I believe I could cover my truck inside and out with 100 dollar bills and it would not equal what I have in it so far (only slightly exaggerated).........and I'm not close to done yet.
Funny that I consider it to be a "budget" project.

Man have you got the expense part right.

These trucks will "$40-you-to-death" at Home Depot, Lowe's or OSH. When I go to The Truck Shop (and im going again today mostly cause I'll be somewhat near it) its $100-$200 easy.

I actually WAS gonna use Ivory as the contrast but finally used "Almond" - which looks like a very light yellow against this green. But I like it so far.

I know im probably gonna score new mirrors and just price (yeah, right!) side window & vent wing glass.

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

Ok, so today I took "G&R's 57 GMC"'s suggestion in post #384 above, stopped at the local bicycle shop to ask for an inner tube out of their trash. They said, "Take as many as you want!" I only took one and did THIS with it:

Yeah, kind of meh.... But the ones the shops sell don't look much different. It is what it is I suppose.

I also finally got my Craigslist-find front bumper painted on the reverse side and mounted. Thereby finishing the recent front end work:

Hell of an improvement to me.

In preparation for installing door weatherstripping, tomorrow I clean out the door interiors (loaded with crap), Ospho overnight then paint with KBS...maybe Rust Reformer; depends how bad it looks after treatment.

Dan
what also works and is available in different colors is large shrink tubing. I used it on my 1986 C10 stepside just remember to put two layers on cause in about 8 to 10 years it will start to wear, but easy enough to cut off and redo.

Now THERE's an idea!

The inner tubes will work but I wish there were something like those "crinkle up" garden hoses I could cut up that would be neater, more "tidy". I don't like how loose the inner tube looks.

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

The crinkle up hoses. are you talking about the bendy part of a bendy straw? =D
I've seen automotive filler....tubes? I don't know what to call them. The things that screw on to a bottle of oil, so you don't spill any. I don't know if they're long enough, but it's worth a shot.
I can't find a picture of one, but it's like that, except it screws on to the bottle.

Dan you need a smaller diameter tube, one that just fits the chain

Yup, you're right. I need tubes off a "roadie" and not a mountain bike.

RE-VISIT the bike shop!

Thanks Kim. It's looks better in a photo than in person but the old one was pretty cloudy. I'm just happy I finished the front and can move onto something new....cause there's ALWAYS something new!

Man, I've never seen shrink tube THAT big. I think I'm gonna take another run to the local bike shop instead for a smaller diameter "roadie" bike inner tube.

Ha ha, yeah she IS kind up on her tippy toes huh? And those are 75 series tires too! But if you go back and look it needed EVERYTHING when I got her so F150 takeoffs super cheap takeoffs from Craigslist were the way to go.

I'm still considering if I'm going dropped axle & springs, or IFS. Either way, she's getting much lower though nothing like some guys do. I still want to use her.

Oh, thanks! I have the rivet kit already, the vent glass, and the window felt & anti rattle strips already. Just trying to resist my urge to buy chrome window & vent frames....but I know I can't!

Yes, all rattle can crap. It's not that smooth up close. With the tiny patterns a spray bomb throws its nearly impossible not to have "stripes". I plan to wet sand the hood and fender tops and give them a re-spray to offset that soon.

Ok, so today's work:

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

Yeah, yeah I couldn't help myself. I went to ask if they had an off white or almond in those letters. They said only black, white or chrome. Being the immature clown I am (at age 58!) I had to try the chrome. I like it. I don't mind if you guys say you don't.

To be honest I love this look. I shouldn't. The truck is nowhere near worthy aesthetically...but I can't help myself.

...and the "slippery slope" of "while I'm there" made me realize the new mirror heads made the arms look like hell. Which in turn made the door handles look terrible

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

I'm trying to decide IF I like the scratch guards or not. Feel free to offer an opinion:

I THINK these trucks never came with these scratch guards, but maybe the Cameos did(?) Anyway, they strike me as old timey, but for some reason they also strike me as vaguely low rider-ish. I've got no problem with low riders I'm just not into them for myself.
They may be too much.

Dan, were those chrome letters difficult to get on straight and lined up correctly? Yours look like they are perfect. I got a set of those a while back but haven't installed them yet.
