Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Did some work on my sending unit today. The sending unit for my underbed tank was a 90 ohms while the factory tank and gauge are 30 ohms and since I wanted to keep the original gauge I robbed the transmitter part of the 30 ohm sending unit and tacked it on to the sending unit for the new tank. Then I soldered the connection and bent and cut the float arm so that it matched the 90 ohm one and stuck the float from the 90 ohm onto the 30 ohm. Tested it with the multimeter and it works great
The 30 ohm transmitter bent and cut and the new float on to the same dimensions as the 90ohm transmitter |

Great work Nik. I admire your "work with what you have" attitude. You don't just order parts from a catalog.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Thanks Dale, it just kinda clicked in my head that even if all these aftermarket parts weren't available It wouldn't really make a difference as I have bought next to nothing new for it, well that and I'm cheap

I think that is pretty applicable to most of us!

I love the way you just figure stuff out and get on with it. What does your family think of all the work you are doing? And as far as being cheap......... I LOVE THE SOUND OF CASH JANGLING IN MY POCKET !!! It certainly beats the sound of it landing on somebody's counter top....... Also means you can use it another day for something more important.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
I have to say I really like the looks of the 60-66 body style, not much I would change but the one thing that bothered me was how big the gap between the top of the wheel and the fender lip. I got the idea from vin63's build. So today after school I got busy and started cuting. I added 2 1/2''. Worked through the rain but still made progress. Welded about half of it up. Here is the 2.5'' panel welded in and the lip mocked up

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Then I cut the lip section in half and moved them apart by an inch so the lips line up and welded in. Only finished one of the two peices of the lip. I should have it done tomorrow

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Did some more work on the fender sectioning. Cut and tacked in the rear portion. Now I just need to weld in the centre section.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
I also started on shortening the driveshaft. I grinded the weld down on the camaro yoke till I could see a little crack then I tapped it with a hammer and it came right off, then I cleaned off the rest of the welds. Now I just need to measure and most importantly cut it square and carefully weld the camaro yoke to the original driveshaft

Looks good buddy! Be Super careful on getting that yoke on there. Ya don't want it to be off because vibrations can cause severe problems.

I have been thinking about doing the same thing for a while now I need the front fenders to hide the tire without doing air ride . good to see your doing the driveshaft too. make shore both u joints are lined up the same. I would take the yoke off so you can use the square to check it to make shore you have it straight both ways before you do any welding . |
