Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4
This has got to be the best modification I've done for actual improvement from before. This thing is so quite now the silence was almost numbing lol. It also takes off much faster i'm also impressed with the clearance!
Best safety glasses ever! What do you guys think?

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4
Thanks guys it drives so nice now i'm amazed at the difference its a different truck. No problems on the freeway could keep a steady speed much easier and could just cruise at 80 like a dream. The power it puts to the wheels now is impressive its never tested until you do a burn out and it past with flying colors lol! Its also lighting the tires up for a second in 3rd at 35 if you punch it
All in all this really made the truck more usable to me at the moment and it only cost me 2 holes in my frame nothing else was changed other then removing the t case. Pondering a break booster as well this thing is not fun to stop at high speeds its almost terrifying...

Do you guys agree that the coolant in the oil is just from leaking past the rings? It only started getting water into the oil once it was running it was also pushing exhaust pressure into the cooling system.

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4
Probably gonna want the head surfaced, magnafluxed, and checked for cracks...and new pistons and rings would be good to..Dude..Why not do a full rebuild on the engine? There are stock engine kits on ebay for as low as $300...If I was you I'd get me some flat top pistons, a 194 head, little more cam, and some headers an a 4 barrel...You should see about 160 hp with that...maybe even slightly bigger intake valves 1.84 over the stock 1.72...then have lumps installed...15% more airflow...I've heard great stories about the lumps.

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4
I think your right TJ me and my old man were talking it over about the band aid so to speak with just getting her running again. I really love and miss this motor so i want to do her right. I want to do some custom stuff with the intake and build a split manifold as well.
As for getting the 4x4 on the road again i just happen to come along a 400 sbc for trade what do you guys think?

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4
The trade is for labor so really not losing anything out of pocket atm. yes its rebuild would be ready to drop in. Why do they run hot T.J i don't no anything about them i didn't even know it was a Chevy motor at first when he said he had a 400. It came out of a late 70's or early 80's 2wd short bed he said it would just boil the tires off the truck! He pulled and rebuild he was going to stick in a boat but ended up in his garage.

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4
Kro--they do run hotter than a 350 but with a good rad it should be fine. on the 400 the center cyl's are like Siamesed so no water flows between them, something like that. I ran one 406 in my Nomad for a few years before i went big block. I liked that eng 406 better than my BB 468.

Nice part about a 400 is they Rev like a small block but have a lot of torque.

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4
Well guys i ended up finely pulling off a full time job to coincide with my part time job been looking for almost a year... So I've decided on a full rebuild of the 230. Also decided I'm going to get a newer car so i stop running into problems with getting to work in these old beasts. I'm half way tempted to go get a 2014 impala Started on the split manifold tonight here's what i got so far!
Tomorrow with the mig welder my BBQ and a bit of patience i hope to have her finished.

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4
So i'm finely getting back around to the truck. I've been missing her lately i want to run the I6 in it but at the same time i just cant discard the v8 if it would take less money to get running again. I'm looking at atleast 800 to rebuild the I6. So i took the time last night to figure out whats up with the v8. Looks like i can get a pair of rebuild heads and she would be ready to run again its got a gouge in the piston but its still ok its not very deep. Was looking on the local classifieds last night and it looks like i can just buy another set of machined heads for close or less then rebuilding mine.
What do you guys think happen to cause this to happen, do you guys think the lifters are ok? me and my old man are thinking the value spring is what caused the value not to close fast enough allowing the piston to hit it. it over headed when it happen.

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4
Weak valve springs may have been an issue..or a possibility of a sticky valve? To much lift on the cam can cause the spring to sprong. lol
