Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Wildmandg, welcome to the boards and yes you do have a Highlander truck with the YG6 Promotional Package. Your truck has the 618 Seat code which is the Orange Highlander trim. If you go to Page 1 post #1 in this thread you will see SSTim has pictures of the different colors of Highlander plaid. You also have a Promo Package Higlander, the YG6 Code and if you go to page 2 Post #38 again SSTim has explained what was in that pacakge. Your truck when new with the black exterior and orange highlander interior would have been a head turner.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Welcome to the forum and for making the plaid pickup thread your first post!

The good news is your truck is a factory Highlander and a Promo Package A at that. The seat however at some point has had the cloth inserts replaced. Plus there have been other changes besides mother natures ever present rust.

In case you don't know your truck was built in Oshawa Canada for the US market which accounts for the SPID being a different format than most of the US built trucks we see.

The original solid black is a big plus with me and the fact it had an orange plaid is outstanding! If you decide to rework the truck please consider the orange plaid in your truck it will be something different.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I've had the truck for over 20 years and it was my daily driver for awhile. It turned into just a work truck when I needed it, but I have been neglecting it for the passed few years. My intent right now is to just have a usable truck. The po swapped the 307 for a 350 with what he said was a 3/4 cam. It does have a good lope to it. I got her started a couple of weeks ago, but won't be road worthy until I go through the brakes. No brakes to speak of! The good thing is I bought a lot of parts for it when I first bought it and I still have them! It will be a slow process because of my lack of spare time and budget, but I'll get there. I know I can come here for help when I need it. I've been reading a lot of posts in the forum the last couple of weeks and you guys are full of great info and ideas.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

while not highlander plaid, the vinyl would be VERY useful to an upholsterer if in good shape. Could just add the inserts. Even the center scrolled sections alone are valuable commodities, wish I'd had that to start with when I had my highlander cover made!

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Want to thank everyone for their time and interest in making these plaid threads go forward. We have been able to show a number of trucks that were "hiding". Some not so much and others in deep cover as complete reworks.

If you like them or not the important factor is identifying the trucks that are out there while trying to save the really rare and original condition units as Highlanders.

While the feeling that a Highlander Promo Package is somehow better than a Highlander trim upgrade only truck still persists. The fact remains they are both "Highlanders" in every sense.

Additionally we have laid to rest that GMC cloth ran the same dominate up and down pattern as the Chevrolets, and not the often repeated but never shown cross pattern early brochure pictures suggest. Plus the unwelcome fact (to some) they used fawn paint on the cluster and glovebox doors vs the black they probably should have been.
These are both due to your efforts to find and post original rare GMC Highlander Plaid upgrade trucks.

THANK YOU!
Lets keep going forward and continue to find these trucks and post ad links for those interested in adding a Highlander to their garage.

It's cool to see all the tricks that came highlander style. Love to see them when these threads Pop up. Thanks ss tim as well for keeping the numbers updated and new trucks posted.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I saw this truck on EBay and after looking over the equipment thought it may be highlander with the seat redone. I got the seller to send pic of the spid and I was right.

Here is another Hidden Highlander and I don't think I remember ever seeing a short fleet Highlander.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

On my way back from lunch today and met this truck at a red light. Saw the caps and made a u-turn to chase it down...found it in the parking lot of Harbor Freight. Went inside and found the owner. A lovely old gentlemen in overalls and with a cane. He is the second owner since '74. It's had one respray and had a seat cover over the blue plaid. He didn't know what a Highlander was, but knew it was well optioned. Interior was gorgeous. Tilt, A/C, sparkling original carpet, and the factory radio...and it's had the camper top the whole time...a very complete and unmolested original. Just over 100k miles. We talked for about 10 minutes and exchanged info. It's committed to his son, but what a gem. Lucky just to see it and hear the story. Wish I had more pics.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Thank You for adding those here.
Both are Promo Package "C" (YG8) trucks.
The Hugger Orange Deluxe Two-Tone is always a striking combo against the Orange Plaid trim.

While SWB Highlanders are not unknown they are few and far between. But this truck is the first White with Gray Plaid Highlander I can recall of any series or model.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Tim, have you ever run across short step Highlander. A monotone orange short step with the orange plaid seats ( could you get plaid buckets ) and the parchment and black interior trim would be a super looking truck.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Thr Highlander trim was only offered on Fleetside pickups C10-30, Suburbans C10-20 and Blazers. It was not offered in Stepside, Chassis Cab, 4x4 Pickup or 4x4 Suburban models. However I have suspected there are a few out there so if you find a documented variation please present it.

Another Ebay Highlander, this one is a C20 and the seller is advertising it as a Highlander.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Already Gone, this is the one I missed by one day. He paid $800 for it and wanted to sell it to me for $1600 the next day, the cab is nice but the rest is pretty rough. After I passed on it my buddy told him about the Highlander package hence the reason he decided not to make it a shortbed.

Here is the SPID again in a more legible size.

Nicely equipped Custom Camper 20, a YG8 Promo Package Highlander in 461 Deluxe Two-Tone with 604 Gray Plaid trim.

But I need to point out the truck is coded for and appears to be 511 Medium Red/521 White and not the Hugger Orange the seller is claiming.

No the Highlander Plaid buckets were only offered with the Blazer CST trim. In fact they were the only fabric buckets offered in the CK truck line for 72.

Looks decent. You think they would have aired up The tires before the pic.
