Re: Previous owner '68

Getting the bottom all tied up. Still waiting on speedo gears to get the speedometer right for the rear end and tire size. Also waiting for a new modulator.

Got the intake glued down and tried the valve covers for fit. They need painted but it won't quit raining!

Having said that, I was in the garage waiting for paint to dry so I went over the disassembly and assembly sequence in the book. Uh oh, on pg. 52 fig. 3 it shows the governor filter here.

But on pg. 106 fig. 9 it shows it going into a different hole...

Re: Previous owner '68

Does it make a difference??? Not sure, that Cliff is a smart guy, but I started thinking it should be in the pg.52 fig 3 location. So I got even more experience and took it back apart and put it where I think it goes.

I did find a page that said chevy's use one filter and BOP use 2 (one in each of the locations shown). Not sure if this is correct but I guess I'll find out when I rebuild the pontiac tranny.

Location of the pcv valve in the intake. Don't worry, it has a baffled grommet.

Cliffs phone number 740-397-2921 He may not be working this week...

So what kind of a crank case breather are you going to use?

The old 283 style oil fill with a open element breather.

I won't install it until after I put the engine in the frame. Less for me to break with the cherry picker!

Re: Previous owner '68

Well, I screwed up the valve covers by sanding out defects and then painting too heavy and early. It wrinkled badly. So, since I'm waiting on parts for other things, I decided to tear into my alternator. Its a 10si series Delco Remy so nothing special.

Glad I tore into it, the front bearing is shot and the brushes are pretty short.

So now I'm waiting on yet more parts!

I pretty much emulated (copied is such a dirty word...) you and Zicc! I really like the vintage 283 look.

They come apart pretty easy as long as they haven't been close to salt water. If they have you'll break the 4 skinny bolts! I broke a bunch in the Navy!

Re: Previous owner '68

The speedo gears came in and I got them installed. I have a 3.73 rear end with 28.9" tall tires, so I ended up with an 8 tooth drive gear and a 21 tooth driven gear. Also installed a new transmission mount.

I also put on a new modulator. I used the red stripe, but may have been better off with the black stripe.

Re: Previous owner '68

I had bought a 73 up transmission cross-member knowing I would have to do some welding to get it to fit. I think it is going to work.

Put in the new parts for the alternator. Need to get some spray insulator to spray the windings before I put it together.

Finally got a decent coat on the valve covers. I'm waiting on decals for the Chevrolet script. I'm not trying to paint them again.

Thanks! but it's not so much skill as it is determination. I tend to overthink things and that can sometimes slow me down. Sometimes I have to tell myself to stop building it in my head and get something done.
