Re: My '59 Apache
Denee, Thanks for the reply.
The underside of my roof has crusty rust on it. It's not holed-through in the middle but it IS in a couple small strips in the rain gutter on the passenger side. I've got to cut that out and I'm hoping I don't find I need to replace the entire roof, ala Kabwe (Bam). I don't know how it got so much rust since there SHOULD HAVE BEEN a headliner up there. But it did sit un-driven and outside from '91 - '10! Regardless, I need to take an aggressive sanding disc to get it all off, Ospho & neutralize it, then KBS it (I guess) so I wasn't planning to add ANYthing that could potentially be a place for moisture to accumulate. |

Re: My '59 Apache
What about the hollow space around where the headliner goes. I saw a page somewhere that showed a roof skin being replaced, and wow, was it rusty inside of there as well (only surface rust). But that got me thinking about that space......... Has anyone ever thought about popping a couple of small holes that could be welded up later, and filling that hollow space with some expanding foam? It would GREATLY reduce outside noise, and possibly help with heat as well?
Just a thought...... Hmmm Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: My '59 Apache
Everything I have read about expanding foam screams "run away". It attracts and traps moisture, thereby compounding the issues down the road.

Re: My '59 Apache
Sometimes my brain works a little on the slower side! I had bought this electric fuel pump and paid extra for the rubber bushing mounting kit, then like a dummy, I ran hard lines to the pump and secured them to the frame (not shown in this picture)~ and wondering why it's so loud! (It's probably loud anyway) So, I bought braided fuel line and all the stuff (Summit racing) to make this line system work, but forgot to order one fitting! lol
Hopefully it will make a little quieter I'll report back when I turn the ignition switch back on. Haven't heard from Kyle, the guy overhauling my axle~ I hate bugging people! I betcha he couldn't get that broken off pin out! dne'

Re: My '59 Apache
Always glad to help a friend! I'd like to see what you're up against? (is this in your build thread?) If only they had know about undercoating back then, but who would have thought to undercoat the area up where you're talking about!

Re: My '59 Apache
I feel you pain on the axle. I took the front axle for my 1950 F1 to a small machine shop to have him press in new kingpin bushings and hone them to size. Took a month to find out the axle was bad. Found another axle in a week and it was another month to get it back. He did a great job, only charged $40, and told me from the beginning that he was a small, one man shop and very busy. Still didn't make me not want to call him every couple of days to see if it was done yet.
BTW - mine had about 3/4" top to bottom movement on the wheel with the worn out bushings when I took it in. Scary.

Re: My '59 Apache
Some electric fuel pumps are just really loud period no matter what you do .....but try making sure the bolts going through the rubber block have rubber washers spacing it off the backside of the frame if you know what i mean ?

Another Toy?
I need to call Kyle and see what's going on with my axle! darn! Deep down I'm kind of hoping he'll say it's not repairable and I need to find a replacement!

Not to hijack, but as a side note it's my luck day - maybe. I found a CL ad for retractable 3 pt seat belts for (get this) $9 each!! Turned out it's the same place where I found the bench seat for my '46. This place buys surplus car pool vans cheap, strips them bare and ships them to Japan. I have NO IDEA what the Japanese use them for but apparently there's a good business doing it. The seat belts are all dark gray - I wanted tan or black (dye-able?) but for $9 its pretty hard to argue. |

Re: My '59 Apache
Wow Dan! that's a great deal! Kind of helps make up for the not so good deals! You're always welcome to post stuff in my build!
As for me, I drove to the shop where my rear axle is~ he hasn't gotten around to it of course! He said he'll call me when he gets the axles out so I can take them to get machined for the 4.75" wheel pattern. My shackles were on back order from Ecklers, so I canceled those and ordered from Classicparts. la-di-da, hurry up and wait! argh! lol

a little more progress!
Well~ finally got something done thanks to parts showing up
Finished the braided fuel line. Got the slider springs in! And the partially new shackles. Part of the old shackles were OK and so that saved a little money. Now I just need my rear axle! Last time I'll brag on someone~ And bought a little toy, me me me! This will be fun at the area where my 5 y/0 precious grand daughter is and just around the neighborhood~ had to get something to take the place of motorcycles! kind of giving up the habit of bikes thanks to tinnitus and Houston traffic! My husband didn't want me to sell my sv650, but, it's not sold yet, but I never ride it.

Nice progress Denee! Have you even gotten word on whether your rear axle will be usable or not?

Re: My '59 Apache
Hi Rick! When I spoke to Kyle(the man overhauling it), he said the ring and pinion looked ok, but the spider gears and all the bearings and seals he would replace. However, I know that when things are torn down, other problems materialize. I'm tempted to go over to his place and work on it. I know he's busy and my axle is probably not on his list of priorities. But in answer to your question- I hope yes! In the meantime I'm kind of stuck until he gets to it

Re: My '59 Apache
Hope he gets it done for you soon. You did tell him that your project is 100% stuck waiting on that, and the only thing holding you back from being done with a multi-year project, right?

This is going to sound bad, but I think she is in rear end limbo, being held hostage by Kyle...

Re: My '59 Apache
Well, Dan, Orrie, I went by last week and he wasn't there, but the axle was where we left it, then later I called Kyle and he said he would get on it like "white on rice"! Well that week went by, so I went by and when I mentioned his name, it's like nobody knew who I was talking about, my Spanish is not good, but Kyle isn't Hispanic, he's actually quite handsome with wonderful mannerism !
So the last couple days his phone would say, "at the customers request, this number is unavailable" something like that. So I went by again,--- Long story short, he called me yesterday, said he took it to his home where he was going to work on it, plus take the axles to have them machined for the 4.75" wheels. It's not in my soul to be mean and chew him out. I figured the worst, I'd just hunt for another rear axle, but just maybe he's going to get it done! I'd hate for this to tarnish his name with me! I think what slowed him down was that broken pin, plus this probably wasn't a money making proposition for him. Who knows! Now I'm fixing to head a few hours away for a few days to be with my oldest daughter, having our second grandchild, a little boy is soon to be So in the meantime, the Apache is on hold, but once the rear end is installed, that should put the truck on the ground and be ready for a test drive, then work on putting in the carpet. I'd put the carpet in but the truck is on the lift. Right now I've been working on my little Geo Tracker. It will be my around town vehicle! As soon as I hear from Kyle, I'll post, but I'm not holding my breath on seeing that rear end again. If I'm away, I can get my brother to get the rear end if it Kyle gets to it. My wife is from El Paso and I spent a few years in Texas. Her relatives are from the panhandle and OK. I learned you do not mess with Texas women. All sugar and spice until they reach the tipping point then it hits the fan.

Got the boat anchor back
You guys are too funny!
Kyle called me yesterday and said all he needed was the pin that was broken off. So I found a chevy dealer that had one and took it to him. He said the ring and pinion are OK and the spider gears he polished(I'm sure polishing made the pits better). To have the axles drilled at a local machine shop for the 4.75" would have been 300; I passed on that. However, I said to please go ahead and replace the axle seals while the axles were out. (I shouldn't have had to ask this), then I asked about the pinion seal cause I knew it didn't look very healthy, but he said it was OK. He charged me 50 dollars for what ever he did or didn't do. I was just happy to get my axle back. I cleaned the rear end, but had lost interest in it to paint it. I filled it with 90 wt and not long after 90wt started dripping from the pinion seal~ this didn't surprise me! I let him know via phone call, then text, I think I got a butt call from him as when I went to answer it, he didn't respond and I called back immediately and got the answer message. Despite having filled it with grease, I feel I should take the differential cover off and make sure he did put the pin in, that maybe he didn't get the broken pin out after all! I'm feeling ill However, I did see new axle seals, so he had to have pulled the broken pin! This morning I'm going to go ahead and install the rear end on the springs, then hopefully get the yoke off. I think I'll buy a new yoke as this one, when I bolt the U-joint up to it, there is slop between the keeper pins~ at least 1/8" or more. I saw I can get a new yoke for about 75? Probably be a few days more before I get the new yoke, but at least the rear end will be out of the way and I can bleed the brakes, etc. All I can figure, he must have thought I wanted something for nothing~ but when he originally quoted me 400 for everything and I said yes, he surely saw that I was a serious customer! I think he just didn't want to mess with it! I'm really tormented by this and fear if he conducts all of his business this way~ he's just a ________________ fill in the blank. So, get this rear end functioning and see how it does. I'll not install the parking brake parts, (which I haven't worked on finding yet) until I see this rear end work. This yoke hasn't been off in a while, but the pinion seal has been changed out once upon a time. Pretty nasty!
