Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

I bought myself a Birthday present and it came today, one day early. Langdon's ceramic-coated cast iron headers

I stuck them on just to take a picture. These are gonna be great! Now I can start working on the exhaust pipes. I'm still trying to decide on an intake manifold. Indecision may or may not be my problem.

Post Re : Post Your Straight Six Pics!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ! :

Be aware that splitting the exhaust like this , reduces scavenging and so reduces available power at low RPM's like off line acceleration .

Adding a crossover as close to the outlets as possible , will bring back the low RPM power and you'll still look nice and have that roaring open exhaust sound .

Did I ever post pix of my 292 ? I'm getting ready to tear it down and might have pix of it as purchased....

Thumbs up Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

In general ;

Using one carby per intake port will give you maximum fuel economy , power and throttle response all at the same time .

It is critical to personally check and make sure you have identical carbys and jets before beginning . Never trust the guy who sold you the carbys .!

Once they're installed you must have each one disconnected from the others and have seperate return springs , balance all carbys until they draw the same amout of air @ idle , (use a Manometer or listen for the hiss ) , then re connect the linkage and adjust it so that when the accellerator pedal is flat on the floor , all the throttle pates are perfectly vertical , now you're done and will be able to shame about 1/2 the stock V-8's and break U-Joints etc.

Good fuel filtration is imperative , I like one before each carby , always a clear plastic one so you can see the crud before it screws up your carbys and time consuming proper adjustment .

Once properly adjusted , CARBURETTORSDO NOT GO OUT OF ADJUSTMENT !! all that popping and coughing is ignition or other things , LEAVE THEM ALONE .

" CARBURETTOR " is a French word meaning ' Leave it alone ! ' " .

Can you expand on this a little? I'm wieghing my options for a fuel system, and I've never really heard anyone else lead me in this direction. I have 3 matching carbs, but I'm not exactly sure what they are just now, but that's not really an issue, having to get others. I would probably buy all new anyway. I'm sure some are better than others. But if I could gain power without losing toooo much milage, I may consider this route. I haven't bought an intake manifold yet because I can't decide what I want. I'm pretty sure I don't want a 4bbl, though. I like different.

Offenhauser makes a 3x1 intake for the L6, getting 3 carbs set up is kind of a PITA to set up and tune to its full capabilities but once you do it is worth it in a n/a setup!

Post Re : Multi - Carburation

It's pretty simple :

More carbys allows better metering of the intake fuel charge , as GM's L6 engines all have three intake ports , this means three carbys will work the very best .

Not a simple thing to adjust in the beginning but once done it's terrific .

InLine engines with single carbys always have a long intake runner so the end cylinders always run lean , even of you plop on a two or four barrel carby .

More precise metering of the fuel improves throttle response and tractability in daily operation , you really have to experiance it to believe the massive improvement .

Be aware that romping the throttle will use more fuel no matter what else you've done , a little bit of reality check there .

But of course.

I think I just might go this route. I understand linkages and how to make things work as one, and this would be a nice challenge. I've done a little research last night and I'll do some more this weekend, but it all makes perfect sense to me. Good amount of "cool" factor, too.

I'm sure there are some carbs that would be easier to link up than others. That's what I'll look for. I'm sure, with my luck, the 3 identical carbs I currently have are the toughest to link.

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

I'll do it, Slick Copper. I ordered the manifold last week, so I hope I have a package waiting for me when I get home tomorrow night. (I work out of town during the week).

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

Oh yeah!

My 3x1 manifold came this week. Milo approves!

The 1st carb is taking a bath right now. I'll rebuild it nest weekend and throw #2 in to soak. I only have enough carb cleaner for one at a time. It's going to take a little modification to get hot water heat on this intake, but I have a couple of ideas. I'm going to go ahead and use these model 'B' carbs, since I have 3 of them.

I've often dreamed of this carb set-up. Please post your experience with it - either here or in a separate thread - after you get it going. Please post the dog's opinion too.

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

Any shots of how you ran your kickdown cable to the linkage by the carb? I swapped the manual for a TH350, and trying figure out how to make it work. The obvious spot on the bottom of the throttle linkage doesn't work because the lower part of the linkage is at or just below the manifold. The linkage connected to that, at the carb, goes side to side instead of front to back.
Ideas? Shots of how you ran yours? Thanks

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

The 327 in my 66 bit the dust and I wanted to go back to what was original to my truck. Picked up a 250 w/ a brand new Offenhauser intake and Flow Tech headers. Found a Holley 390 to go on top. Working on a few small things like linkages and a bracket for power steering. Hopefully I'll get to fire it up soon!

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

For tube headers you would be wise to replace those locator pins on both ends of the head with bolts or even better, threaded studs.
Every hole down the side of the head is threaded 3/8-16. The heads originally had those end pins and the third hole from each end had a threaded stud for a 3/8-24, nut.
Originally they had both long and short clamping bars for between the IN and EX runners. I found extra short bars and used only those between the tube headers and a Clifford manifold.
I put studs in all eight holes and it makes it a lot easier to hold everything in place for assembly.
