Chickenwing,

The one on the green truck was this huge monster of a tank that sat across the width of the bed. Must have held 50 gallons! It was huge. The PO gave it to me, I hauled it home, tripped over it for a few months than gave it away. When he took the tank out, he told me the truck returned to original ride height!

Your rear Auxillary Fuel Tank came from the factory that way.
In 1970 (only IIRC) GM put it in the rear between the frames like a Blazer.
Then for 71/72 it was moved to the front like the saddle tank types.

You should see something like this on the option sticker:
For 1970 (rear-between frame) option: N18 AUXILIARY FUEL TANK
For 71/72 (front-left saddle/box mount) option: NL2 AUXILIARY FUEL TANK

Ironic, in that GM had it right the first time (by putting the gas tank between the frame) then moved it to outside the frame and carried that idea forward into the 1973+ line up bringing the class action law suit down on them. Someone at GM was HELL bent on having saddle tanks damn it!

I say thank-you also! I never knew that either. Gives me more reason to consider this filler neck style for my future burb tank addition. I just can't believe they went backwards with it. The mounting of the saddle tank is kinda stupid IMO. Mounting through the bed floor with carraige bolts. My bed floor had stress cracks all around the bolt holes.

My buddy had a 70 that had the saddle style tanks (one on each side), with a wood bed and his basically fell out when the wood got old. I agree. The frame rail style is much better.
