When I started on my truck I thought that I could complete it for $10-12 K.
I now have spent over $20,000 and still need to spend another $2 or 3 K before I get it finished. That original grille, bumpers and many other original parts that looked so good before now doesn't look good enough. Hopefully I can get it right the first time and then just enjoy it for many years to come. |

I've got an big ol envelope that I'm keepin every single parts receipt (no matter how small) in.I keep it tucked away where the wife won't go looking for it.I'm gonna guess the final total will be in the 30-35k CDN range.I'm not concerning myself too much with budget,if I want a certain part I buy it so long as it isn't going to put me in the poor house at that time.I try to buy a couple of things each month.What I buy depends on how busy I was at work.If I had a good month,then I tend to buy some of the bigger ticket items.If not so good,I buy smaller stuff that is still important.
The funny part is I think I have nearly as much invested in new tools bought for working on this project as I have invested in parts to date.lol

As we all know, rust repair, paint and bodywork are the areas that take the most time and cost the most money. Finding a rust free (or as close to it)project is the key. Doing as much of the work yourself also helps. I painted the truck in my avatar and ended up with $12000 in it. I sold it last fall

I just passed 5,000 on my list I started one year ago. It's finally ready for state inspection. The previous inspection sticker was a 1989. Since I bought this 28 years ago for 2,500 and spent almost nothing on it until now, this has been a cheap ride.

Sharp ride CST,had mine almost 20 yrs. And will have under 5K when done. Doin' all the work, swapmeet shoppin' and great prices from Tim Christian. One thing I've learned you don't have to spend a fortune to have a clean ride.

Forgot my other rig, the 2wd Roadster Project (Not started yet)
Purchase Price - $1200 + $50 for gas and food to go get it Wheels and Tires I want - $2000 wheels and $1200 tires Suspension Mods I want - $2000 full air ride w/ c-notch so that's $6450 so far and not even half way done ![]() Body - Paint, patch panels, labor, etc..... at least $4550 (It's ruff) so that's $11000 and close to finished but not really ![]() Misc. - the category for everything I have forgotten $4000 so that puts me around the $15K mark if I am real lucky ![]()

Er.......I was at $12,000 last time I added up all the receipts about 5 years ago. That was with having my dad's buddy do the body work, and having a built 700R4 and brand new (at the time) 1994 350 donated to the cause by my VERY generous uncle. I have NO idea what's in it now, and I don't really care. If I had to venture a guess, I'd guess around $18k to date, and I'm getting ready to spend LOTS more on it soon...that is if I can stop modding my Duramax.

![]() ![]() This truck, $1500 to buy with a good 305 V8/th350 that runs well. The rear end was shot, I rebuilt it with new 3.42 gears. Bought a new ECE 4/6 drop kit, and a friend had a set of 15x8 Vette style ralleys super cheap so on they went. I picked up the tires used but very good tread on them. I did body/paint work for a living many years back so that was labor (lots of it!) and the cost of paint to get it done. Older pic, it now sports new chrome bumpers front and back that the pic does not show. Now, it still needs an interior, and the bed liner but mostly it is good enough to me to consider it done. I have shopped around at swap meets, classifieds, and word of mouth for scrounging up good usable parts to build this thing so far. I have about $4000 in it total right now.

I'm at about 12K and still spending. Started with a pretty rust free K20 from Washington state and have about 5K-6K worth of NOS and some used parts in the basement. I'm still looking for more parts, but the worst is over, I think. I'll probably have 18K-20K intuit when it's all said and done. As far as my better half, she has learned to just not ask!

My truck is a total budget build. I never plan on showing it and just want something that looks good and drives well. So far I have spent about $1800 including the $600 I bought it for. I doubt it will go over $8000, but you never know.
I buy a lot of take off or used parts when new parts aren't required. The stereo and entertainment will be nearly $1500 when finished and if I run out of things to do, I want to do an LS1 + 6 speed swap, so that will be $2500+. I also take my time buying things. Like my wheels, there are a ton of them out there, I just waited until someone needed to get rid of them and scored a set for $150 (I have seen sets on ebay for $500). I also have sold a lot of things I have replaced or upgraded, so that saves a few bucks. Look at it this way, if you plan for the worst, then you're fine. |
