Re: Are hand throttles rare?
My 72 Cheyenne C10 has one, for what reason i dont know. For the longest time i just figured it didnt work. But yesterday i took the dash bezel and pulled the knobs and i dedided to pull on the metal arm that hooks to the knob and to my surprise the gas pedal went down as it should. Now i just need to find a knob that works because the one i have just pulls off when i tighten the screw. Its kinda cool.

Re: Are hand throttles rare?
In 1970, the records indicated that 3% of the commercial trucks were equipped with the Manual Throttle. I didn't find other records that showed the percentages.
My 1969 book shows it to be an option on C and K 20 and up, option code K31, priced at $8.65 (MSRP), delivered. It isn't listed for the C or K-10's. But, looks like anyone could have bought one and put it on, themselves. That's the good thing about options from "back in the day". I once had a '71 Pinto and wanted a rear window defogger as well as some other options. This was back in '78. So, a visit to the Fomoco dealer and a look through their parts book, and I had my defogger. Wish I still had it...it was a fan unit and would have other uses, for me, today.

Re: Are hand throttles rare?
My 72 c10 cheyenne actually has it listed as an option on the glove box. Cant wait to use it as my "cruise control" once i find a knob that makes it work or rig one of the other knobs to make it work.

Re: Are hand throttles rare?
Guys take it easy. The hand trottle is a "twist" operation not a "pull". The twist gives a slow gentle movemen t to the cable as opposed to a yank on the knob. The choke is a pull and then push off. Does not have to be real precise in working. The hand throttle needs a very gentle application to avoid RPMs shifting and causing the truck to jump up in speed or buck out of control.
Most of the hand throttle cables I come accross now (35 years old approx) are broken - do not operate when turned. The mechanism is a worm gear but the cable has become detached internally. A choke cable could do the job if yours is broken but could also create its own problems. Does anyone know of a repair shop that deals in small cables like this or is there a board member that does this?

Re: Are hand throttles rare?
These are not cable.
My throttle has a single hardened steel wire that runs inside of a coiled steel guide. I'm working on some sort of fix for a detatched wire inside of the handle. I'm thinking that if I drilled a small bearing to accept the steel wire, I could fasten it to the wire with a punch. If anyone else has a fix let me know, I would be glad to try it.

Re: Are hand throttles rare?
A hard wire that runs inside of a coiled flexible steel duct/tube/pipe/guide, is a cable. When you go to a parts store, and ask for a choke cable, or a throttle cable, it will look similar to the one you have. I'm not trying to be a wise acre, just trying to help you when you go to get a replacement.
When I was selling parts, I had people asking for "Center head gaskets for a '69 Deuce and a Quarter", as well as a "sturmistat". There's lots more of this stuff happening every day. It's a cable.

Re: Are hand throttles rare?
as has been pointed out, the knob assembly needs to spin independently of the inner and outer cable which are fixed in place. i repaired mine by using bicycle shift cable. these come with a small boss on the end. i ground the boss down and perfectly round using a dremel. the cable then was fed through the opening in the side of the handle assembly where the aforementioned boss rests and rotates inside the handle assembly. (if you have seen one, you will know what i'm describing) anyway, worked good for me!

Re: Are hand throttles rare?
Boy I love this board. We have had 2 or 3 great ideas SHARED with other members. Everybody on this thread is trying to help each other out with ideas to fix a hard to find part.
Good thoughts about the bicycle shop and lawnmower repair shop. Funny thing is that I have my own lawn service business and had not thought of that angle. Thanks for sharing - Bob

Re: Are hand throttles rare?
FYI Chevy Duty sells the Throttle knob (9$) and the Throttle knob and cable combo (27ish) in their catalog. My luck they wont have them or backordered or something like that. My cable isnt broke because when i pull on the piece that is suppost to go into the knob it works (footfeed goes down), but when i twist it the thing makes a noise and "jumps" back to where it was before i started to turn it, so im gonna reorder the cable which i am assuming has the mechanism that allows it to twist outward becasue i see nowhere that i can get into the mechanism so im guessing its all one piece (ill ask to be sure though).

Re: Are hand throttles rare?
It sounds like the lower end of you cable isn`t turning.Try cable lube or,first,PB Blaster to free it up.The rarest aspect of this set-up is the mechanism at the pedal.

Re: Are hand throttles rare?
called chevy duty (now classic auto) they had the knobs but discontinued the cables . So i took my throttle out of the cab and saw that you could take it apart from the back, so i got it apart after about an hour of persuading. The mechanism consists of two "little bullet shaped pointed metal things" with the other side open ended with springs that fit inside. These push into the grooves of the "screwlike thing" which causes it to turn outward or inward. The cable on mine is attached to the other end (no breaks) so i am blaming it on the grooves not being deep enough or worn, or the points on the "little bullet shaped pointed metal things" not being pointy enough and fitting into the grooves. Its probably a combination of the two because when i took it apart i made the springs stronger by stretching them a little bit and it made no differnce.
