Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
I have seen that font used before... however, it does still put a huge question mark out there though.

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
I was wondering about the SPID label typing looked a little different to me also. It sure looks original otherwise.
It almost looks like it was manually typed at the factory or something.

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
With all the descrepencies in the VIN-spec sheets that we`ve seen,I`d vote authentico! Why would someone do that on an obviously otherwise totally original truck?I think we put more value on these sheets than GM ever did. It`s an original med.gold/white `68 Longhorn with the original 50th anniversary-only interior in it.If I was going to clone one,I wouldn`t put odd transitional year options on it to raise suspicion. We`ve seen`68s with these`67 options listed. We`ve seen`71 with Custom Sport Truck equipment listed,402s called 396s,GMCs listed as Cheyennes...

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
Here is the one from my small block Longhorn. I did not check to see if it was produced before or after your truck. I am still trying to find the door for my big block Longhorn...I moved my office last summer and don't know where I put the glove box door.
It looks like my truck was produced after yours since my number is 169,801 vs your 162,xxx.

THAT`S A FAKE!!!!!!
I know....shut up,jerk. Both Freemont trucks and only 6,867 units apart. They`re practically twins.

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
Here is my big block Longhorn SPID...don't ask where I found it...LOL! This "born-on" date is 696 units before your truck and does not list a Panoramic Cab option so maybe your SPID was typed by a new trainee! I've got you bracketed!
Every truck I have owned in this area has been a Fremont truck...I don't know any other kind!

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
The original SPID for this truck got spoiled by the high speed impact printer at the factory, so to keep the line moving, someone ran the build sheet up to the secretarial pool with a blank SPID label and had them type one up.
I don't think there's a conspiracy here. It's not like this truck was seen speeding away from the Bobby Kennedy assassination or anything. However that would explain the repaint and doctored SPID

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
LOL,that would be a VERY early`68...like 5 years.I think you mean RFK.I think all the west coast trucks were built in Freemont.Weren`t they only built in four locations?
This one is a real close unit.

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
Bobby Kennedy = RFK. He was assassinated in CA in 1968. This truck was made in CA in 68. Coincidence? Maybe...but part of that VIN is inscribed on Jesus Son of Joseph's Ossuary.

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
The incident at Area 51 also predates the production date but I am just the reporter here...LOL! I will bet there are some workers from the Fremont plant that mysteriously went missing about that time. I also recall seeing a faded picture of Jimmy Hoffa in a '68 50th!

Here are more pictures:
Is it a 350 or 327? I don't know if I can ask this question here (I don't want to brake any forum rules), but can someone tell me how much is this truck worth in its current condition? It runs very good! |

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
It sure looks like an original 327 except that the oil filler pipe should be black. The only way to know for sure is to get the numbers off the back of the block.

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
Ok,that No-Spin sticker is counterfeit. The factory never put them there.AND,there`s just too much effort put into making it look like it`s actually been there since`68.I mean c`mon, this guy is good.It looks too real.BTW,I think that steering wheel is off a speed boat or something.
The no-Spin sticker just came loose in your packet when new. The engine# is on the block, looking up,just in front of the left head, and below the alternator....really.Not kidding.

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
Actually here is my No-Spin decal from the dealer install. I have all the paperwork for the dealer installed items on my truck which included Detroit locker, AC and factory tachometer. The dealer put my No-Spin sticker on the door jamb.
Original '68 327 valve covers off my truck...waiting for restoration. Nice original split rim spare! The gold floor mat is correct but the seat is not...it should have cloth inserts with the Custom Comfort option, vinyl gold with the CST option. This sounds a little strange since all Longhorns had CST badges you still had to select the either Custom Comfort or CST option. The passenger side valve cover has a bracket that should not be there.

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
I guess I am getting a little confused! was there a "Custom Camper 50th anniversary"? These 2 emblems are on both door on the same place.
it makes sense now that the seat is not original because it is very low to the floor. |

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
The custom camper emblem for the fender is correct for the Longhorns, they all had them. The door emblems I have seen on the Longhorns have only been CST so that is different for sure.
That door could have been replaced.

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
My post was NOT to say the truck was fake in any way. I just noticed the font was different and the terminology different. I have never seen RPO N40 called hydralic steering. It is always called power steering.
The truck is very real and so is the equipment. It just seems that whoever typed the SPID used different terms.

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
Here you go.
Another interesting note on the SPID is the location of the numbers in the W/Base and SE boxes compared to mine. I don't have any question as to whether or not it is a 50th...it is legit...just some odd items that are a little different. The driver's side door does not have a CST emblem so someone replaced it or was shaving the emblems. It looks like someone was trying to restore the truck so a number of items could have been replaced.

Couldn't it just be a Custom 50th longhorn? There are several custom 50th's long fleets running around.

Re: Follow up on Longhorn purchase!
tomscst, According the GM restoration manual the 50th Anniversary package was automatically badged as a CST. You will notice that my small block Longhorn had the Custom Comfort option but was badged as a CST and the big block LH was CST and badged as CST. Now I have only seen three 50th Anniversary Longhorns and don't recall if the other one (I saw it at night and it was in pretty sad shape) had the CST emblem on it.
I made a mistake when looking at your dirver door in the first pic...the embelm is hidden by the mirror. Is the driver door original? Tom, I just looked in my GM Restoration manual, Longhorn brochure, '68 Chevrolet truck brochure and '68 Anniversary Promotion Sales Package and can't find any reference to '68 50th LG packages automatically being CST. This might have just been a reasonable deduction by Longhorn Man and myself after looking at what came on my two trucks. Accoding to the restoration guide if you ordered the Custom Comfort Package you should have gotten the Custom badges, not the CST. Maybe they ran out of Custom badges the day they assembled my small block Longhorn...LOL!

I have seen both Customs and CSTs,but didn`t know if Longhorns were an exception, like them all being CustomCampers.
