WIW 348 GMC Big Block w/ Power Steering

I've read about the plaid valve covers dozens of times, and never really understood the story. From what I got out of it, the factory thought the plaid valve covers made the engines run cooler.

It`s a reference to economy.Before these days of highly defense political correctness,it was ok to make references based on nationality.The "Scots" were thought of as being cheap or thrifty back in those days.There were cut-rate gas stations called "Scot".Scotch-brand tape was launched by 3M.The Scotch were refered to as thrifty people.The V6 was actually supposed to be an economical powerplant.
Jake,you`re right about the V6s not being "W" heads with two cylinders lopped off.But,they look like without looking too hard.The spark plugs go into the top of the head on a V6.They are in the bottom on "W"s,for instance.We always seem to focus on valve covers.
Just to make it clear,348s never came in any of these GMCs.
