OK...let's not let this post get locked. I have a feeling the post from watahyahknow might of had a language mishap.

Sorry about your truck and I'm glad your allright. I had that happen to me once in my Dads T bird....but I was guilty of power braking it unmercifully...I went into a gas station to avoid traffic.

Re: my baby got hurt :.(

Sorry to hear about your accident, Hope the truck is salvagable and you are unharmed.

I'd also like to say that "shtuff" happens, and I am not going to point fingers. Ive had this happen to me in my DD, and even though it was only the front brakes that went, it was near impossible to stop quickly with just rear brakes....with hardly any wieght over the rear axle, they lock right up. A+ for shooting for the opening in the wall too.

Let me know if you need any front end parts, I'm about ready to paint my truck and have some leftovers I'd be willing to donate to the cause should you need them.

damn that sucks man, hope all is well with you and glad to hear that it wasnt any worse, i hope the truck can be fixed cause i know that the truck being unusable can be a bigger hurt than an actual injury, wish you the best of luck with getting your baby fixed and back on the road

It was an accident. You never know when or where it will happen. How can you avoid the unknown? It is impossible.

for those who dont know : you need to chainge the brakefluid every 2 years cause it atracts water and that lowers the boilingpoint of the brakefluid causing brakefade when driving downhill corosion inside the calipers and metal brakeline and stuff like that .

also use the right type of brakefluid dot 4 (or 5 im not realy sure) is syntetic and if you put that together with the lower grade mineral oil it will atack the rubbers inside the brakesystem .... be warned
Thanks for the advice Brake Scientist. Mabye if contact Dateline NBC we could eventually eliminate car accidents all together.

Re: my baby got hurt :.(

Really sorry to hear about the loss dude. Hopefully it's some simple sheet metal. Good to hear you weren't hurt.

On the topic of brake systems, for anybody really interested, todays vehicles use both front/rear and diagonal split brake systems depending on how they meet FMVSS 135 failed brake system testing requirements. That says (among other things) that if you lose half of your brakes, the car has to still be somewhat safe and driveable. So it all depends on the vehicle. Case in point, almost all trucks are f/r split. Almost all passenger cars are diagonal. Corvettes are f/r split though. It just depends on what they can get away with as far as failed system testing.

And yeah, brake fluid most certainly absorbs moisture from the atmosphere and from condensation. It is designed to do that because a nice bubble of water in your brakes would be catastrophic once it boiled under heavy braking. That is why brake fluid is very well sealed at the parts store. If you have an open container sitting on a shelf that is not sealed fully, it's no good after about 4 months or so. It's called wet brake fluid then. Brake fluid is called dry fluid when it's new and all of you who have done brakes and felt how dry your hands feel after working on them, you can start to appreciate how agressive brake fluid is at pulling moisture out of a system.

So you need to change it every few years. Of course, in the US, we don't do it, so we all have DOT 3 in our cars instead of the better performing but lower boiling point DOT 4 that is in European cars. They change the fluid over there. If you want to be really lazy but still sort of responsible about it, you can get a new (uncontaminated!) turkey baster and pull out all of the nasty black fluid out of the reservoir and fill new in there. It will disburse the moisture and lower the average content, but it's MUCH better just to bleed the brakes. Imagine how all of your brakes rust from the inside out when there is water suspended in your fluid.

Getting down from the soapbox now. As if anybody is that interested in brakes anyway.

Re: my baby got hurt :.(

ToddSS, thanks for the info. I was under the impression (likely based on advertising) that modern cars use a dual-diagonal braking system -- that is, both front and one rear operating on half the system, and both front and the opposite rear using the other half...

Union Bridge,MD.I know Tuck,he`s Chevy man from way back.I gave him a crewcab frame to build a mini-Peterbuilt off of.I wonder if he got it built.Haven`t talked to him in years.

About brakes going all at once.It can happen and it happened to me in my`72 GMC K2500.I replaced the MC/Booster and still couldn`t get pedal.Turns out it was the old-style Kelsey-Hayse brake controller tapped into a line at the proportioning valve. The p-valve is after the dual MC and there can be crossover air in certain situations.

DEJA VU! (see Zonaman Augers One In)

Your ride looks like that and you walked away! You didn't have as a bad a day as you think! No wonder there's still so many of these trucks around! You'll be back in the saddle one way or the other!

All I can add is that you did a darn good job controlling the run away situation while finding as soft a landing as you did. It coulda been worse. I do know how you feel about the loss of your truck as I tore the fender off the Studebaker earlier this spring.

sorry about the loss. at least we know our trucks can take out a wall if needed.
