Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

I'm not a teenager, I just turned 30 , and I have a pretty good job and make a decent salary and I still don't have money for my toys. Between mortgage payment and all other responsiblities, there's not much for parts, so we still have to be creative even after we have job that doesn't require an apron or a headset. The key is just setting up a realistic budget and sticking with it. Make a parts priority list for the truck and save up your money and start from the top. Before long you'll have the bada$$ truck that'll leave the 50 foot long skidmarks in the high school parking lot.

Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

Well I'm 21 and in college what i work out pays for books and gas, and although i have a pretty sweet 69 its something my dad built and i have wanted to build my own for years and so i took what money i could save up and bought me a 71, and i have found that if you just look you can find pretty nice stuff cheap if you dont care to wait........

Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

my first was a '65 stepside with a '66 parts truck (in the 70's) and they weren't any cheaper to fix then...LOL.

For what it's worth you're going to appreciate your trucks a lot more having done the work yourself, scraped for parts and don't owe anyone when it's done. My wife and I handed both our kids new cars at 17 years old and they could really care less about them; they're theirs so we don't care but I wish either one of them had 10 minutes invested in making them their own.

Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

I'm 15 and bought my truck when I was 13 for $1800. Money isn't much of an issue, I just work like hell through the summer lobstering, and hope I make it through the winter. It helps being conservative (aka CHEAP) with money. I hate spending money when I don't think it will benefit me somehow.

Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

I am 17 and got my truck at 15 for free since my uncle bought it new and it sat for 10 years so it just got out on the road sunday and I am burning up the gas at 3.19 a gallon. It dosent pay to drive on the express way with big tires. Dad pays for some expensive parts to make up for suspension maxx buisness work "Torsion Bar Leveling kit", and put 21hours in at the movie theater cause we got spider man3 .It helps getting discounts on new parts threw the famliy auto shop. I save about 30%. I love driving it. Ps is very loose compared to the current cars.

Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

Well I just turned 21 last November, but I built my first vehicle when I was 15.

I worked as a "***** boy" cleaning up at the local hot rod shop just so I can get a discount on parts, and to get some go-fast knowledge from all the old guys that go in there and bench race. I learned a lot working there. And this being a small town, farmers and the like would post "work needed" flyers around. So I took all those jobs I could get. Also, being at the shop and overhearing people talking about stuff they had, I also got some good deals on a lot of parts and whatnot.

For instance, the first vehicle I ever had was an '88 GMC S-15, went through four different SBCs and even a 396 at one time, all that and I only had about a grand or so in it all. But alas, it sadly got totaled(work truck...tree trimming...tree fell the wrong way...) so I yanked the drivetrain out of it and put it in an '83 Cutlass I picked up for $250. Everything there came from just listening to what people had and making them reasonable offers.

Then at 17 I got a job at O'reilly Auto....with a steady flow of income I made my first "real" automobile purchase. A 1995 Z28, my boss was going through a divorce so I got his toy for only $2000. This car was running high 11s(low 11s on the bottle) already when I bought it. A few more bolt ons and I got it to drop down in the 10s a few times. I drove this daily for about 3 years while in high school/college, through the years I moved from job to job and got more money, and it all went to the Camaro, by the time I was done it was so mean it was no longer streetable.

So while hanging out back at the old Hot Rod shop I cought wind of a clean 70 SWB for sale. I took a look, fairly rust free, chassis/lowering was already done, AC worked....a nice truck indeed. He was asking $4500, I offered him $4000 cash right there on the spot. He agreed, So a buddy of mine and I said we were gonna take a test drive first...but we really ran down to the bank and took every cent I had out and scraped up some more from friends/parents to get him his money.

So to answer your question....I did every nasty little job I could and kept my ears and eyes open. Its still working today for me too...

Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

I'll tell you, reading this makes me feal hope for tomarro. I am in the excavation trade. We offer top paying summer jobs to anyone, but especially kids. Almost none of them have the "want to" to work, or maybe a reason to. You kids out there hold your heads high, and reach for that bar!!! Now you may be workin for parts for that truck, but later you will realize that you have learned to work. I am proud of you, and am raising two little boys now.

What if the parking lot is a dirt field? Mainstreet works good in a small town! Just don't hit nothing and watch for the cops.
