Re: Quadrajet Carburetor Rebuild

Lawman02; I've rebuilt many Q-Jets in my lifetime of Chevy ownership, and in my experience if your carb is running rich, the culprit is the float. Some of these carbs had a brass float and some had a phenolic resin float. Both were subject to their own failures. The brass float would crack due to vibration, and the phenolic resin float would soak up gas, they both got heavy and caused the wet fuel level to be high which equals rich mixture and poor fuel economy. Rebuilding them is not rocket science, but very close attention must be paid to measurments and for sure the float level. I would be glad to help if you decide to tackle this yourself...nofords

Good to see another member in the area!!! Just will be starting to work on mine, just got it in the fall. I love to drive it more than my Dakota!

I might just tackle the job, heard before of the floats, maybe clean it up check a few things and replace the float, I'm mech. inclined, work on air craft for 10 years so I think I can do this. I'll check on some basic rebuild kits from some where? I should be able to get them locally.

Re: Quadrajet Carburetor Rebuild

What you need to do is buy a rebuild a kit and any other parts you need for your carb, then find a guy who knows how to do it and buy him a case of beer if he does it for you. Thats what I did and now my carb works great.

Here's a pretty good site for re-building Q-jets with pics. There's even one that show the Idle adjustment screws.

Hey a case of beer sounds good! We can drink it and rebuild the carb! Thanks for the carb rebuild site, now I have 2 sites to compare.

That's exact what it's doing...running rich. I'll give it a try if you don't mind giving advise. Or I would pay to have you rebuild it. I know it would be a learning experience for me and although I'm not a mechanic, I grew up on a farm and in the logging business. I'll read the link provided on this thread and then buy the kit. Any special kit that you reccommend or just one from NAPA? Randy

Thanks VV, great info available in there. Even figured out how to save it in my computer. Wonders will never cease J.

Re: Quadrajet Carburetor Rebuild

Randy,
Get the carb number off the driver side rear of the main body, and lets see about getting a good overhaul kit, along with new float and filter, etc.
These guys have really good parts, if we can't do good at NAPA.

The guy that wrote that document (Lars Grimsrud) is one of the best rebuilders in the business and is the "guru" over on the corvette forums. Just got a note back from Lars and he will rebuild and test run a carb for $160. Thats where I will be sending one. Google his name, he is well known/respected. His email address is V8fastcars@msn.com

Re: Quadrajet Carburetor Rebuild

Thanks Chip
I did call a local carb shop here. Told him I'm not getting very good gas mileage, like 9.1 driving around doing the speed limit, not putting my foot into it etc. etc. Well he asked if I passed the emission test that we have here in Idaho. Yes, I passed no problem, then he said well your carb is ok. Now if I'm only going to get 9 or 10 mpg I thought to myself I might as well get a 400 HP engine and have some fun and get the same mileage. I suppose I could look into another manifold and carb also. I would bet I should be getting at least 12 to 14 at the most which would be ok, I would understand that! It's a daily driver and I really like driving it around.
