This may not be the right place for this, but you guys are scaring me.
Back in the old days when I lived in Phoenix & gas was getting real expensive, probably around .40/gal (yeah, I'm that old), a contractor was having having problems with people stealing the gas out of his "Jerry" cans that he used for refueling his on site equipment. The cans were strapped & locked, the lids weren't.
He got tired of it, so he filled them with diesel, paint thinner, & anything else he had around, & then topped it with gasoline.
Sure enough a day, or 2 later, they'd been sucked dry.

It was like, "enjoy your carburetor rebuild & whatever else you need to fix, A-H."

That happened over 30 years ago, & I smiled then.
You guys brought it back to my memory & got me smiling again.

wierd deal... same thing just happened to me the other day. The only thing was that it was at the High School between the time that I got there at 7:45 and the time I left for my running start classes at the college at about 10:00. I was so pissed off, I just filled the tank the night before, 17 gallons of 92 octane down the drain. I probably never would've notice had I not just filled her up the night before... so now I have a locking gas cap and baseball bat behind the seat. Oh yeah and when I told the security guard she didn't do any thing. So I pretty much told her that if I ever caught the little SOB that there was an A$$ kicking in line, and I let it float around the school a little bit!

When I had this happen years ago I machined a basket with holes in it that had a top lip the same diameter as the neck on the tank. Take off the filler hose to the tank drop in the basket so the top lip rests on the filler neck, put the filler hose back on. Now the fuel flows in fine, but you can't get any sort of a hose past the basket. Hope that description makes sense. Still working on something to prevent the hose cutting under the truck.

With my luck, if i used the "fill with Diesel only" the first time my wife drove it would---well you get the picture ---jewel's!! (pirvate joke!hehehehehehhe).
I like the little basket solution--- but if they want something bad enough--they will find a way.
Leave an old gas can in the bed with a hand full of sugar cubes mixed in with the gas. When they pour it in their tank, the sugar cristalizes in their carb, valves, pistons, cylinders etc. You will know who is the thief when you drive past them--wave, ask they if they need some help---have another can of sugar gas and give them this too! they will think you are a nice guy and stop stealing your gas!!

Possible? I suppose. Anything is possible. It would be tough. The seal is very tight, and there isn't a good angle to get on it with a hammer & tool. But yes, it could be done.

I don't care what you do - if someone wants to steal your gas, all they have to do is crawl under your truck and run a hose to their catch can straight from your line that runs into your pump. Then it don't matter what kind of system you have implemented, you are dry.

Gravity isn't the issue either, ever heard of a siphon?

There are measures you can take - but NOTHING is foolproof.

Just like a house - you can guard every window, door, and entry way 6-ways to Sunday - but with a cordless sawzall, you can make a new one anywhere you want.

WOW Guys,
You had me on the edge of my seat reading all of these. There are some really great ideals. I am going to look for a diesel sticker now. I like the basket ideal, I will mess with that and see what I can brain storm. I thought of the parking close to a building or other car. I will do that when the Longhorn comes out of the garage. The picture of the dogs were cool. I am working on the wife to let me do that to. I will have to teach him to like the bed of the truck. Picture camaras are in the future. I have no street lights out here. I live in a new developement part of town. Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions. You all, and the ideals is what makes this place great. Even though the gas got stolen, I refuse to give up my trucks. As always more ideals and talk on this is welcome.

Huck's idea could also be used another way. Instead of putting sugar cubes in with the gas, mix in a little bit of bleach. If you've ever seen that episode of Mythbusters where they did car myths they put bleach in the gas tank and the motor did not sound too great when they ran it. They let the gas/bleach mixture sit in the gas tank for the night and the next morning the gas tank was rusted.

that reminds me of the rig my dad made a while back that i lovingly called the siphonator 5000, from an old electric fuel pump that he used at the pontiac dealer ship to siphon out some of the tanks when he had to do tank repairs so they weren't so friggen heavy to drop and put back in. i'm a fan of the hard/sharp pointy implement and mean guard dog idea, but the basket idea is a good one too. maybe weld some sort of bracket along the frame that covers the fuel lines all the way up to the pump.

The Cool Cap does require modification.
It does not attach to the stem that comes out of the tank, it sits flush on the side of the cab.
