Re: Today I found out that new dodge trucks are fast.

New trucks are nice to tune and not get your hands dirty with, but you can't beat getting greasy and knowing that your big block (Chevy, Ford, whatever) will out run or out pull somebody in a newer truck, espesically when you built it. My 78 bronco with big mudders has a 460 that I got dirty with and it has out pulled and out run a few newer trucks. NOT BRAGGING, just saying it's all about what you yourself did to your motor to make it BAD A$$. My 69 will not out run any new truck, but I built it and I know what its got.
Sorry, new trucks stike a nerve with me.

Re: Today I found out that new dodge trucks are fast.

I looked in my garage to see what I can come up with using my old spare parts. I believe these will work. It's getting a little personal now.

Re: Today I found out that new dodge trucks are fast.

My dad's 05 Chevy Crew Cab Duramax is an Awesome truck. Any truck that can haul a 16,000 lb bumper pull water tank 4x a day all summer is a good truck in my book, plus if you kick it down, it GOES. Plus it has XM satellite radio and Automatic climate control. I love these trucks, but this is much better for a farm truck and gets 18 mpg on average. These trucks are better for cruisers and showing off, IMHO.

Re: Today I found out that new dodge trucks are fast.

Funny thing. I haven't had a bit of trouble going around and even pulling away from any of the new trucks since picking up my "new" drive to wok in the rain and salt car.

Am I cheating?

huh? If anything, i'm off on the Dodge by saying it only has 375 or 380 net. I quoted my numbers from a chassis dyno -- thats the motor plus manifolds, plus cats, plus parasitic drag from the accesories, transmission and rearend (with limited slip-- an open diff takes 10 less hp on a chassis dyno)

Isnt that comparing apples to oranges? What is an LS-1 anyway? a Trans Am engine?

Better to compare the Dodge Hemi to a 6.0 truck motor. Then its an equal comparison

Actually, a stock LS1 was nothing for it. LS6 - LS7, that's another story.

Re: Today I found out that new dodge trucks are fast.

Wonder if the guys & gals running flat heads had this same discussion with the over head valve folks back in the 50's?

Cool is cool. Fast is fast. I like the older vehicles when they are on jack stands with me working on them. I love them on Sat nights, and during cruises. I love making a piece for them that no one else has. I would not want to have to drive it every day 25 miles one way to work, pull a double axle trailer on the interstate on the weekends, ect. I'm not saying that you can't, just I don't want to be the one who proves me wrong. I have gotten older and really like the comfort of the new vehicles. Be carefull when stating hp. I'm an auto eng. by trade. GM and Dodge both look at it differently than Toyota and Ford do. I didn't choose my Dodge because it had 2 more hp (or whatever), I choose it because I liked the Dodge better. If I was just after hp, I would have purchased a SRT 10. Nothing ever made like it, but really not a work truck that I would be willing to use every day. I have noticed a lot more LSx motors going into older trucks here on the forum.

Apples to oranges, again. A TA has tranny ratios optimized for performance and acceleration, is a 13 second car from the factory, as well, it sits 3' lower and weighs 1000-1500 pounds less.

It is a more plausible comparison if the trans am engine was installed into a new truck with a truck transmission

Iroc-Z's and Trans Ams ran in the 14's in the 80's with 225-245 hp, but a new truck with 300-350 hp does well to be a 16 second machine

Exactly!

My brother has a '78 GMC that runs 12.20's at 108 in the 1/4. If you are into drag racing you immediately notice that the trap speed is WAY low for that ET. That same engine is a Camaro would be will into the 11's with a trapn speed of 113-114 or better. As much as people don't want to give them credit, the new Hemis are pretty strong for what they are. They are not world beaters, but they are one of the stoutest engines ever put into a regular production pickup. When I say regular production, I'm excluding the supercharged Fords, and SRT 10. They are specialty trucks.
