When I leave for work at 5am there is not alot of people on the freeway. When I come home at 4pm traffic is moving under the speed limit.

Im with you redneck

& the sad thing is, that wasnt even a dead strait head on, if it would have been it would have flipped for sure

Plus only being at 70 MPH thats just running into a solid object, a head on collision at that speed would be 140 +
There is no way anyone would survive in a head on in that thing

I think they are cool too, but I want the Busa powered one in the vids above
But it'd be cooler if it had a passenger seat with it

at 70 miles per day and 8 mpg it would take 8.75 gal of gas at $4.00 a gal is 35 bucks a day

70 miles a day at (I'll go) 40 mpg it would take 1.75 gal of gas at $4.00 is 7 bucks a day

saving 28 bucks a day

$14500 divided by 28 (amount saved per day) I come up with 517.85714 days to pay for it

I hope I did that right. if my math is right it will save big money in the long run If I was not 6'3" and fat"ish" I would try one out

Show me a car that is going to perform well in a 70mph head on collision please.

That's pretty close to the math I did before I bought mine. Basically two years of daily driving back and forth to work. Not to mention that we use the Smart for just about all our errands now. I notice the extra cash in my pocket already.

I'm 6'2" and once you learn to get in, it's no big deal. The car is as comfortable to drive as just about anything else I've been in. Even one of the techs from the shop next to us went for a ride and said it wasn't too bad. He's the same height as me and over 350lbs. Kinda looked funy sitting in it though.

actually about 537 days at $4 per gallon and a 70 mile trip every day. Most people work about 250 days per year so in two years the car pays for itself, then it's a $7K per year savings in gas.... that's based on the 40MPG that he appears to be getting...500 days if he can squeeze 48MPG out of it...

Good deal!

I have a buddy with a prius, 60 MPG.... I'm not laughing at him anymore! I just paid $3.79 for midgrade in a Tahoe..

Re: My New Ride

Handy thing is if it ever breaks down you pick up & put in the back of your pick up & take to get fixed!
You said the header gives it 6 more horsepower,so whats it have now 12? All kidding aside at the price of gas it wont take long to pay for it & like you say traffic's light when you go to work & slow coming home. This way you have more cash for the truck instead of gas!

Ive never been in one of these smart cars so I cant tell you about head or leg room. But I do drive a Scion XB and can relate this, four of us in my Scion...Im 6' 250lbs, my brother is 5' 11" weighs 320lbs, we are both comfortable with plenty of room in the front seats. In the back seat was my son, 6'5" 210lbs and one of my buddies, 6' 200lbs. Thats a car load of pretty decent sized guys. Tons of head room and leg room, even for my son in the back seat, he couldnt believe it. Not a lot of storage room though, but most small cars with four people in them have a limited amount of extra room.

Re: My New Ride

Don't get me wrong. I'm not giving you a bunch of cr..., cr..., crud about your purchase.
I just have a tendency to look at things very pragmatically.

How many decades and 100K's of miles do you have to drive to make up for the $14K price, as opposed to driving what you are now?

Either one of my trucks only gets in the 13-14MPG range. My Plymouth is a little better, but it's laid down right now.
I don't have payments, & my insurance is cheap because I only carry liability. High limit liability, for sure, but once you get past what the state mandates, it's relatively cheap.

I can buy a lot of gas for $14K.

Quite simply, my .02.

Have a good day.

Its not just about saving gas in the short run -- its a lifestyle choice to free up money and resources for as long as you can. And most people need a newer daily driver anyway -- something you don't have to worry about mechanically or otherwise --- why not just retire the old scoot to weekend duty? Its more fun that way.

Kind of like a fat guy going on a diet --- if you just look at it as a way to lose 30 lbs to get ready for your 10 or 20 year high school reunion, and then go back to your old habits -- you will gain it back and then some, but if you look at your new diet as the foundation for good health for the rest of your life - you will succeed.

Kind of a weird comparison, but saving your truck for the weekend is equivalent to our token fat guy eating clean for 6 days, but getting to have 2 or 3 slices of pepperoni pizza, or a 12 oz. ribeye (or whatever) on the weekend

Re: My New Ride

I do the opposite. I drive 12 miles round trip to work so the 67 gets driven almost every day. But now, on the weekends, we drive Jena's corolla to wherever we need to go, or the Silverado if we need to use a truck. So really, I'm only putting about 60 miles on the 67 during the week and "parking it" on the weekends, unless there is a show

If, when I buy a house within the next year and the round trip is 20-25+ miles, I'll be buying a commuter ride for the week.

All good points, except; I don't have $14K just lying around, so I'd have to make payments. That eliminates any cash that was freed up from not buying gas, and then some.
I don't worry about wearing out my '72 GMC. It only has about 40K original miles. Yeah, you read that right.
My Fury is a "beater" ever since A) I "found" somebody's spare tire off their SUV at 45 mph in the middle of the night (that screwed up some sheet metal and the front end alignment), and B) some nice lady did a "hit and split". She started at the front fender and ended 1/2 down the rear fender.
As soon as I get the Fury going again, the trucks will be relegated to occasional use again

Not trying to start a argument or go off topic, but I must disagree with you on this

A new vehicle is a very boring ride to me, where as a old vehicle is different every time you drive
I own nothing but old stuff & I drive it every day

MUCH more fun IMO

Re: My New Ride

I drive a Pontiac Vibe, basically a micro minivan. Trust me it's so nice to be able to go all month on one tank of gas. Back when gas was 3 bucks a gallon i was spending Just 30 bucks a month to fill up. In my GMC Canyon i had before i'd be spending about 120 for the whole month doing the same amount of driving. BIG difference. And the 65 will be far worse than that. So the car pays for itself really fast. Plus now i can haul more than 2 people comfortably

Old trucks are entertaining, -- and i felt the same way when i was a young buck too, but reality sets in when your'e older and have to use your truck or car as part of your job and need it to look presentable, -- or you need a vehicle that doesn't drip in your customer's driveways or whatever -- and if you need something like this, it is much easier to cycle a newer rig in and out of your life every 3 years.

When the old rig has a $10,000 paint job and a 500 hp engine, you just don't want to subject it to everyday use, do ya? Same thing if you have an unrestored, un-molested 40k original miles vehicle in nice survivor condition. They are only that way once and all it takes is a parking lot fender bender to change that,

And as far as car payments go, they're a fact of life for most of the population, and while i would not hesitate to go for a 500 mile road trip in one of my old rides, personally, i wouldn't let my wife drive across town in a sub par vehicle if i could afford something better for the application.

Ask somebody with a new Vette or Mustang GT how bored they are with it. My 06 F150 is Magnuson supercharged and is a high 14 second machine -- its also not "boring" (thats' not Don Garlits fast, but pretty quick for a big truck)

You just have to find some faster new cars to drive

Plus, if the new ride is wrecked, you pay your $500.00 deductible and get it fixed with no hassles. Getting bodywork done on a custom truck, as anyone will attest, can be a big PIA

You just have to find some faster new cars to drive

Plus, if the new ride is wrecked, you pay your $500.00 deductible and get it fixed with no hassles. Getting bodywork done on a custom truck, as anyone will attest, can be a big PIA

I'm sorry; but I have to hang with Spray-Bomb.
And just FYI, I'm what would be described as the "wrong" side of 60.

In other words, "to each his own."
