Road trip pickup and a lot of questions..

the books say aprox 21 gallons on the fuel tank.
There were a LOT made with 17 - 18 gallon tanks too, but I've seen no documentation of them, seems to be mostly 67/68 trucks.

I had actually mnt to say something about tires. Rubber items in general. There are sections of rubber fuel line under the cab from the factory (and about 12 FEET of it if you have a factory or dealer installed Aux fuel tank) there's rubber fuel line by the pump. and it is very common to find rubber installed between the pump and the carb, but not there originally. Check all those places. Tires.... sometimes you simply can't tell if the tires are gonna work or not. When I tire sits, they deteriorate, but you'll never know. I had a Michilin that had tread a mile deep, no dry rot, no flat spots.... BOOM. Blew out of no aperant reason. The part that would really sick if you hade a tire go out for no reason.... you have awesomecondition originalpaint.
If you have the funds.... you might want to consider stopping at a tire store at the begining of your trip.

Funny... those two items I just listed, are the only two that I had issues with.

That is a very nice truck specially for around here.

I would not touch the fuel filter unless it gets clogged. If it is the standard Q-Jet filter in the bowl those things are easy to strip.

Fuild change is a must. Make sure the spare is good and you have a jack/tire tool.

Also it is love bug season down here, they will strip paint if you leave the white gut goo on too long. I'd plan on running through a car wash once you get out of the area.

made it back in one piece, with a minor fueling issue..

We picked up the truck in Cleveland, TX on Friday night, i walked into the garage and noticed that they waxed the trucked, no biggie, but then he told me he had it wet sanded and buffed to remove some of the original factory defects.. I was NOT happy about that at all! The "detailers" also took it upon themselves to remove the firewall grease pen marking from the assembly line.. i almost told him to forget it, he should have not buffed it and cleaned the firewall, but what could I do.. i flew there and had cash in hand, and after all, it was a super clean truck.. I am still a little disgusted thought that they did that to it

Left Cleveland for Pearland and stopped for some wings and Shiner Bock at a wings place in the neighborhood (I already dropped off the truck, I wasnt going to take any chances)

The next morning, I went out and cleaned the windows since they were streaked from the detailers cleaning solution..




We stalled the truck in the driveway, and then I flooded it, good thing the "engine starting procedures" were clearly marked under the sun visor


The oil in the truck had only 1500 miles on it, bt the last time it was changed was march 2004

So, we stopped for a fresh filter and a change of 20-50


Everyone here had a lot of questions and were very impressed with the truck


Now it was time to hit the road


We will be seeing a lot of this dahboard for the next 1200 miles

My friends iPhone REALLY came in handy.. I think we were the first to use the cigarette lighter outlet


About 120 miles into the trip, it started missing and fuel starving,.... changed the fuel filter, nothing, cleaned the points, nothing, changed the coil, nothing.. so we just stopped every 140 miles or so before we got down to a 1/2 tank.. the problem turned out to be the fuel pump, and all is well after I changed that after I got it home.






We also stopped to get some tape to protect the front edge from stone chips, we started to see small chips and needed to take action


Stopping for fuel every 130 miles, this is going to be a lONG drive

Great looking truck! Awesome Score. I have to ask though. Why exactly are you angry at the seller for getting it detailed for you? I think that is pretty exceptional for him to get that done for you. It just shows he really wanted you to be happy with your purchase. It also shows he cares for the truck. Exactly what "Desirable" Factory Defects can be taken out of a truck with a color sand and buff? You can get a grease pencil and add whatever factory markings you want to the firewall. That is what they do in a concourse restoration. I am sorry, it is an awesome truck, and I truly am glad you got it, I just don't see the need for the anger at the previous owner for doing what I'm sure he thought was a good deed. i sure hope you didn't express your anger towards him.

If I was the owner and you copped that attitude towards me I would have politely told you to get off my property and the truck was no longer for sale to you. Try going to court and explaining breach of contract to a judge when you say the owner washed the truck. It didn't decrease the value of the truck any, so you wouldn't win.

Gorgeous original!! Man I really wish I had caught this thread earlier and knew that you would be coming to Pearland. As you can see from my profile that Pearland is my home town. I knew all the places you took the truck by the pics, because I too have been to that kwick kar and all of pearlands autoparts store many times. A gorgeous original like that only a couple miles from my house and I missed it. DANG!!
